FCP settings

Got some advice off of a link one of you kind people suggested about FCP settings for capturing 24pA. I had already captured some stuff with Sequence preset on DV NTSC 48kHz (without -23.98 after it). Device control preset was set to Firewire NTSC (without NDF after it). Is it imperative that I have those settings changed? I had pulldown removal selected also obviously.

Also, I'm using a cheap JVC camera to capture from as not to wear on my DVX...is that okay? Any special requirments since it's not a 24p camera?

Thanks B

this may not be the issue, but I was trying to import some 24pa footage with a JVC deck and found out that that particular deck will not import that footage. I switched decks and there was no problem. I haven't tried a JVC camera, but you might try a different deck/camera just to see.

The deck/camera shouldn't have anything to do with it. Its what's on the tape that matters. I mean I use a Sony deck to import my 24PA footage into my computer. As long as you have your settings MATCHING DV NTSC 23.98 DV NTSC Pulldown Removal you should be cool. Normal 24P footage just select the right options for that and again you should be cool.

No, there are decks that will not work with 24PA footage. Cameras as well. I tried an XL1 to capture 24PA material and it didn't work, but a new $300 sony DV camera did.

24p and 24p-advanced footage casserole

24p and 24p-advanced footage casserole

I have been marinating in this website for a whole day, trying to search for the specific info that I need. Apologies if this exact issue has been addressed before (or over and over and over again), but after several hours of getting lots of juicy information that will prove oh-so-useful, I am still a bit confused about something:

When I first started shooting my current documentary I asked lots of advice about 24p vs. 24p-adv and got all sorts of answers. Ended up taking the advice of someone in LA who rented me the camera, and shot about six hours using the 24p-advanced mode. After that shoot, I was told No! as long as you're planning to output to video and not film, stick with the plain old 24p. So, um, the rest of the footage to date is shot on 24p, not the advanced mode.

I had planned to hire an editor but with an anemic bank account and fundraising at a slow drip, I will have to at least log and organize the material myself. I have FCP 5 and a Powerbook G4 laptop, 1 Ghz/ 1GB RAM, and for now one 250MB Lacie drive. I have printed out all the prior advice but am not sure if I can combine the two different kinds of footage. Any advice would be so, so appreciated.

You can remove pulldown (reverse telecine) from the 24p footage and edit it all together at 23.98 sequence. Or you can add pulldown to your 24pa that's already been processed and edit it all at 29.97.
Depends in part on how much footage of each type you have. If you have any plans to film out you might as well go 23.98

thanks for your reply - I have mostly 24p stuff but I'll do a little more investigating before I make a final decision about what rate to edit on.

thanks again!

I guess it really depends on what you want to do with it. If you're only going to play it back at the NTSC 29.98 fps, then it doesn't really matter which mode you record it in, they are both going to give you "relative" the same results. However, you you want to edit in 24 (or 23.98) fps, then 24pa is a better option. Every single frame in 24pa can be pulled out of the 2:3:3:2 removal, but on regular 24p, I think it's like a 3:2 (? or is it 2:3, do I have that backwards), doesn't really matterr, what is important is that 24p, like every third frame (again, can't remember exact) is interlaced with another frame, causing that evil ghost effect. essentially, 24p Advance, you have 24 100% independent frames, once you do the pulldown, where 24p, you do not. On the note of the cheaper camera, as to not wear on your heads, I've found that some cheap cameras, they just suck with firewire. The editors don't like them and things seem to crash more, which Mac's love to do, so you're giving it even more of an excuse to do so!

um, Macs love to crash?

uh-oh.

I'm leaning toward using my brother's Sony DSR-20 deck to load the material in rather than using either one of the cameras.

Thanks for your input!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you're saying, but I disagree with the assertion that you can't pull 24 full frames out of 24p normal. The frames are just harder to get to in 24p than 24pa. Perhaps we don't disagree, but here is my bible on the subject:

Sure, decompression and recompression of the frames can result in artifacting, but I think that should be the extent of the problem (unless the dv codec causes strangeness).
