FCP quitting after capture!!!

Using FCP 5.1.2 and I have been having a problem with it quitting after I press escape to end capture. I am losing files, and have to go back to restore. The footage is being captured from a S-VHS deck through my Panny via firewire to Mac. I am setting Capture as a non-controllable device. I also just bought a G-Tech G-drive and I am using that as my capture scratch. I know there are some issues with data transfer rates with 400 firewire, but not sure if that could be the problem. Anyway, I have no choice, as 17" Intel mac only has two 400 firewire ports. :( help, this is really annoying, and I have a lot of doc footage to load in.
thanks

Yo! how you doing over there Keif?

First of all, if it crashes at the END of a capture, your footage is still in your capture folder. Just navigate to it and drag it into your project. No need to re-capture.

First things first, you should trash your preferences, use disk utility to repair any damages on all your drives, and try again.

"FCP Attack" and "FCP Rescue" are great pieces of software and if you have them, run 'em...

Try that and it should be fixed... if not, let me know and we'll go from there.

thanks, brown. it hasn't been happening lately, so I'll keep my fingers crossed. After I installed new fcp update .4 it hasn't done it. maybe a coincidence, but I'll try your recommendation if it happens again.

You should still run disk utility to repair permissions every couple/few months or so. Just keeping your computer from future mishaps ;)

That used to happen to me. I found that if, right after I captured and before i did anything else, I clicked on "Save Project" in the File pull down menu, it solved the problem.

I had the same problem too. I have a few questions for scorse. Are you on a G4 by any chance? Also I found the problem was solved for me after I did a few things, one of which am sure of what it was.

Turn off indexing on spotlight for the drive you're capturing it to. ( I think this is why it was crashing out. It was trying to index the new files after capturing them) To turn it off go to the Mac system preferences - spotlight - privacy - then drag the entire hardrive to the window pane

Restart your mac with the shift key down. Continue holding until the default mac screen comes up then let go. (this is safe mode)
While in safe mode open disk utility and select the main mac disk only. Rebuild permissions only for this drive and no other.

Restart up your mac again.

More advice: (you might know this) keep your Projects folder on a separate drive from the media folder.
Keep ALL renders / thumbnail cache and such in the same media folder
Always capture video and audio on the same disk

I've been told that you should rebuild permissions atleast once a month. I know some who do it every week. It also helps other programs run smoothly.

Actually, the only rule is to keep your media and project files on a seperate drive from your system drive. This is due to the bandwidth of hard drive data busses. FCP and the Operating System will eat up all the System Drive bandwidth, not leaving enough for the video stream from the media files. That's all.
