FCP on-set as a DV Rack type system

Was wondering if anyone is using FCP as a DV Rack type system for checking your levels and such...

I haven't tried it yet on my FCP system but it might work?

Re: FCP on-set as a DV Rack type system

I think it can work but you won't have all the same options and you have to be sure you're display is well set up!

Re: FCP on-set as a DV Rack type system

IF you have FCP on a PowerBook you can use the video tools to check basic video levels and color.
The other neat thing is to enable Universal Access Zoooming (in system controls). This way you can zoom up the image and check critical focus settings.
It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of DV Rack but still useful.

You won't have the Underscan/Overscan and the blue gun switch as well as many other stuff like that but as Scottdvx100 said, it's still useful if you can't afford DV Rack!

Re: FCP on-set as a DV Rack type system

I've got a G4 Powebook1.5 running FCP so this should work ok.
i just can't justify buying a PC laptop and DV Rack if FCP can get me looking at my video in a technical way.

Maybe Apple will integrate some type of DV rack funcinality in FCP5, guess well have to wait till NAB.

Thanx

I tough DVRack had an Apple version. We always learn trying to help others ;D

I wish there was a Mac version, I would grab it up un a flash, as this next project is tricky and I need to light a green screen as well.

Re: FCP on-set as a DV Rack type system

Just hooked the DVX up with FCP and the scopes.
FCP will only show the Waveform and Vector scope as the video passes through the capture mode.

Sure wish I could get the other scopes on the capture mode, they only work after you have caputured the footage...such as RGB parade and Histogram.

But this should work pretty damn well. Will definitly work for seeing how even the green screen is lit, and correct RGB value.

Re: FCP on-set as a DV Rack type system

In my humble opinion, the shooting process is such a critical stage of production that (unless I got a very technical shot to film) I'd rather not embarass myself with too much technology — wires on the camera and so on.

A good DP should be able to design a beautiful light without having to look at the figures all the time. After all, it is his eye which makes him (her) so special a character on a set.

The problem (to my taste) with the digital paraphanelia is the stiffness it brings with it in the methodology.

Not a anti-computer diatrib (I'm in love with my Mac as a matter of fact).

The computers and softwares are okay with me during the pre and post production phases, but when time and grace are the most valuable goods you need, I think it's time to focus on this.

Just my two and a half cents...

Thanx Anartiste,
Point well taken, once I get the setup technically, I will pull the umbelical cord and shoot it....as i am using a dolly and that would be quite the freight train of gear, attached by an S-video cable. :o
