FCP on MacPro Laptop

Im using FCP with a new MacBook Pro and its great to have the portability but I find myself tied to the desktop hooked up to a firewire 500gb drive for capture and video files. Sometimes thats fine, sometimes I want to edit on the go, is there any ideal way to have both - multiple scratch disks works for an entire project, but if you want to do some on the go and then reconnect to the scratch disk..is that possible, or any way to temporarily move files back and forth? I think I should have bought a desktop also....

There are smaller external harddrives (160gigs-ish) that run powered by the lappy. Those are an option, but most of the time cost the same amount as their wall-powered big brothers.
