FCP not scene detecting upon capture

When I'm capturing footage off the camera, and I'm using the Capture Now mode, FCP doesn't scene detect. How do I change this? I've been using REC mode for the TC. Do I need to use Free run? What is the difference? And I would like to seperate my scenes upon capturing, not after I capture by hitting "DV start stop" and doing it that way. That just seems sloppy to me. Anyone know how I can fix this?

I've captured with an HD camera on FCP before and it scene detects just fine. What's up with my DVX and FCP?

HDV, because it is an MPEG-2 codec, compresses over multiple frames. When there is a camera stop, the compression stream is being broken, so FCP has to create a new clip. DV only compresses single frames, so FCP doesn't automatically do this. It is the same with all DV material in FCP. I'm not sure why your system isn't detecting scene breaks with the stop/start tool. Are you recording over firewire? And is your tape the original? If it is a dub, it loses the stop/start metadata on the tape.

The best way to ensure that the breaks are where you want them to be is to log the clips first, and then do a batch capture.

You can use the "DV Start / Stop Detect" in the Mark menu if you've all ready captured the footage.

I still recommend logging / batch capture, because then you aren't capturing an entire tape, only the shots you need.

I am indeed recording over firewire, the tape is the original and I've tried the DV Start/Stop trick. I know I can log and do a batch capture, but sometimes, for sake of time, I just want to hit capture now and have it detect where all of the breaks are. And even when I have tried the DVD Start/Stop trick, it isn't breaking the clips in the right place.

I feel like my DVX use to scene detect perfectly upon a capture now a long time ago when I got it, but I can't remember. Maybe I'm wrong and I should just get used to logging with a batch capture.

You could always capture in Imovie (har har), which creates new clips on camera stops. Why Imovie can do this easily and FCP can't is something I don't understand.
