Good luck with the multicam stuff. I tried a three camera live switch w/ multiclip and failed. I was using two streams of 8bit uncompressed SD footage and one stream of DV. This was running on the latest version of FCP, QuadCore, 4Gb ECRam, two Sata drives and one external. No way.
The Apple Procare folks admitted that multiclip in FCP is not ready for primetime. As far as education I would recommend Lynda.com. Twenty-five bucks a month gives you lots of training. The Larry Jordan stuff is great and he has lessons on multiclip.
Really- it works pretty good for me. I suggest you knock those 8 bit uncompressed clips down to DV and you should be fine for an offline edit. Way too much data rate with that drive setup.
Multiclip editing is solid, proven, ready for prime time. Get the book, Apple Pro Training Series; Final Cut Pro 5, and do everyone else's tutorials after you do the first half of the Multiclip chapter in this book.
It's a solid, reliable tool, works very well. But you have to do it the right way. Not totally intuituve, you have to learn the proper proceedures.
I do DVCPRO-HD 4 camera angles edits on a Quad Core G5 off a FW800 drive, and it works flawlessly.
Multicam edit is ready for prime time. Great feature...I use standard definition mini DV and sync in 4 cameras for live concert footage.
If you ordered the FC studio upgrade you should have received a tutorial which included the multicam edit feature. If not phone Apple and say you want one!
Thanks Guys,,,
Ben, can i find that book at barnes and Noble tonight?
Also, off subject, since I will go to Barnes and Noble, I need a GOOD how to on DVD SP.
the last book i got from Brice Nazzarin totally sucked.
It was over 400 pages of what things are, I may not be as smart as all of ya'll
I just want a book that tells me how to make things work,,
not HOW IT WORKS....
Thanks
I second the motion on the APTS book, This is how I learned to use multicam, and I now use multicam a lot. I just got done doing a 2 hour church event with 6 Cameras, all captured to firewire drives. Aside from the enormous amount of space that 5 performances took up on my RAID array (5 performances X 2 hours X 6 cameras = 60 hours X 13GB/Hr=1.15TB), it worked well. There is not enough overhead on the firewire bus to run 6 cams simultaneously without having to lower the quality and framerate, thats why I transfered the project to my RAID.
The process is really easy, basically once you get the canvas and viewer synced you just play the video and click the angle you want when it comes up and it makes the appropriate cut for you.
Also for learning the Pro Apps, the APTS books are the best. Its no nonsense stuff, and basically one huge tutorial. You might look at your bookstore for the APTS book for DVDSP as well as motion.
There is an ATPS book just like the one for FCP on DVDSP. The "Apple Pro Training Series" is a whole library of book, that are Apple's final word on everything, about everything. The end user and trainer certifications are all based on these books. There's one, or more than one, for every pro app Apple sells. Nothing better to learn this stuff on a professional level, really quick.
Don't let the thickness intemidate you, they're faster and easier than you think. Aside from that, they're actually fun to do. GREAT quality footage on the tutorials.
If you lower the playback quality, things run faster, and it doesn't effect your output quality.
Another must have APTS book for all FCS users is the "Compressor Quick-Reference Guide".
