FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

I shot in 24p, and am looking for info about how to capture in FCP 4.5. Please tell me the steps...

Also,

I was going to purchase the anamorphic adaptor, but was stopped by the sales rep and told to just get the .7 wide angle adaptor, that i could stretch the footage afterwards instead of using the anamorphic, they were solidly against using this adaptor.

Please tell me how to go about getting 16:9 ??

gracias, betsy

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

..HAHA!! the wide angle? .. the reps dont know what they are talking about. the wide angle does nothing to help you get good 16:9 over the regular lense on the DVX .. if anything it just deteriorates your image quality with its chromatic abbhorations and flare and such... anyway shoot with the adaptor if you want the best 16:9 or just use the standard lense in letterbox or stretch mode.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

As mentioend the anamorphic and wide angle are not the same thing.
Anamorphic sqeezes the image horizontally and it's unsqueezed on 16:9 TVs. Wide angle is just wide angle (wider view vertical and horizontal)
You can do 16:9 a number of ways, anamorphic is highest quality for DVX. Do a seach for 16:9 and/or anamorphic on this site. You'll find plenty of info.

24p in FCP - Depends on what you want to do with it. If you just want the basic 24p look then you can capture it as normal video into a normal video (29.97fps) sequence.
If you want to work in a 24fps sequence because you're going to DVD or film or advanced effects then you'll need to remove the pulldown.

See the Cinema Tools manual (or help pdf file) and search for reverse telecine for details.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

i knew it!!!  errrrggh.

ok, so now that i have the feedback about the anamorphic lense, what should i say to the dude!

am i at a loss then to convert to 16:9?? >:(

if i shot normal or wide angle in parts, how now do i convert it if at all?

and in the capture settings is it the advanced pulldown or normal? actually i just captured in normal and then the advanced 2332 and it appears the same when i play it back in fcp. should i notice something drastically different at this time or after final edit?

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

..you just crop and stretch to 16:9 first crop it to a 16:9 shape .. and then strech that to fill a 16:9 project window.. ill have to passthe buck to the people here that use FCP to tell you how to do that in FCP though.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

ok, yeah, i need to find instructions on that..for fcp hd

searching searching...

so that is what the dude at the sales place recommended, but is it true the anamorphic adaptor is best? guess i'll consider for future.

nother stupid question: but i'm a fast learner, do i capture in 24p advanced? i do want the filmic look. just a bit confused if i had to shoot in advanced mode to capture it in advanced. i know, i need to find the info scott suggested...i'm looking..

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

You need to talk to the saleperson (or his manager). If you wanted to shoot 16:9 widescreen and they gave you a wide lens then you shoudl return it.

Note the anamorphic takes a lot of work.
You can take your existing footage and letterbox it or crop and stretch but quality won't be as good. Seach the archives for all the details.

What settings did you have on the camera when you shot?
Scene file F5 is 24p by default
F6 is 24pa by default.
Each of these is different and takes a different process to work with.
24pa requires advanced pulldown removal on capture (or after)
24p requires reverse telecine in Cinema tools IF you need a true 24fps final result (i.e. film or DVD)

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

Scott,

I asked the salesperson about purchasing anamorphic lense and he strongly stated it was a waste of money, to buy the wide angle, and then stretch the footage in edit.

I shot in 24p (F5). Some footage with normal lense, and some with the .7 wide angle.

Now, I want to capture/edit this in FCP 4.5. At this time, my final output will be DVD for large projection. I dont have Cinema Tools. What do I do then without Cinema Tools?

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

futurenests..

seriously that salesperson does not know what they are talking about.   i  dont care if he tried it out, or had a friend who bought it, and thinks it is a watse first hand.. it only means he does not know what he is doing with it.

its like giving someone a rifle , and they  go out and hit the deer in the head with it.. and then say.. what a waste.. how much did this cost.. i couldve done that with a stick!.. simply becuase they didnt know how to use it, or what it was capable of .. in the wrong hands.. anything is a waste of money.. i mean the DVX rocks but people who dont know how to use it well still make crap...."it strobes.. its too grainy..  it doesnt do good in no light at all..  blah blah"

check out the threads on barry greens new guide to using the anamorphic adaptor..  i think once it is available people wont be so mystifyed by how to use it and get good results.   its certainly not a waste..

all said and done. the sales guy is just misinformed,  uneducated, or under experienced.

now having said that. there are times when i would rather crop and stretch than use the adaptor..simply because it is too much work/time to set the scene up properly for the adaptor to get great results, and i dont have the time/energy.. so i switch between the two.
you can get good results without it, if you use the proper methods.. a wide angle adaptor is not one of them...
and using the ana adaptor means more effort, time and care goes into every shot to get it right, but it can do a great job all said and done. so yeah, it can be a pain every now and then, but that pain is your gain in the end.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

If you shot F5 then it's 24p (normal 24, not advanced)

Cinema Tools comes with FCP 4 and up as I recall. Check your original install disks.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

um hey loser- i've definitely come to learn that research up front and asking more than one person is the best way to self educate. unfortunately i took the word of this person as the word, and that is ok....and then off i flew home to cayman to shoot my project. now i know, and so, will use the wide angle anyway at times. it just gets costly. so some pain is ok, follow you.

afterall, it is the subject matter and concept that is going to make this powerful...i want it to look it's best, but because i am learning on the fly i have to deal with the results of such an approach.

i dont want it to be a waste of time, i think that by playing with the linear / non-linearity of the story by cutting some versions together myself i'll be better off- otherwise it;s like painting through someone else. i learned on my last piece, that how it is edited really can manipulate the story, and so became interested in this...but the learning curve for editing is pretty huge. and when you shoot like i do, spontaneous locations, uber-guerilla, i dont know what i'll get until i got it..so that much pre planning is impossible..so, anyway, i will consider this a rough edit, and then pass it on.....or get a pro editor's feedback or hand it over all together.

..hands on..agree? disagree?

Who was the sales rep and store you went to when you purchased the .7 wide angle lens? Was it Jim at Birns and Sawyer???

Yes it was, he has been overall very helpful, gave a decent discount when i had a competitive price, and that is what i understood from him when i asked about buying the anamorphic....

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plsss

Hi, I would also like to know the settings in FCP 4.5 to capture 24p (normal, F5 on the scene file dial). Would love to get the film look, but am probably only going to dvd, maybe vhs copies too.

thanks

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

For 24p just capture normal NTSC DV. Set it up so you're using Non-Drop Frames if you're using the timecode for batch capturing. 24p provides the film look frame rate. Just edit it normal and use iDVD to go to DVD or Print to tape to capture back to DV. You can plug your analog output from your DV camera into the inputs of a VHS vcr to save to VHS.

You only have to get into the more elaborate 24fps setup (24pa and 23.98 timeline) if you're going to film or will be using DVD Studio Pro to create a 24fps DVD.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plsss

Thanks Scott. I will be using DVD Studio Pro to create my dvd's, but I'm guessing that I'll be creating a 29.97 dvd. Correct? Another (silly, as I'm a newbie to all this)question: You speak of a 24fps dvd, does the playback unit(dvd) change it to a 29.97 format as it plays back (realtime)?? And is that something that every dvd player can do, or just a few?

I really appreciate your help, and remain,
Your Newbiness.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

The simplest option is just save it as normal video and create a standard DVD.

With DVD Studio Pro you have the option of creating a 24fps DVD. The pulldown should be added in any reasonable DVD player. To do this you can use Compressor which comes with FCP. If you have 24p to start with it means you have to capture it normal and then use Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown, edit in 23.98 sequence and then save out through comppressor.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plsss

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plsss

Thanks again, Scott.

Is there a brief explanation of why 'Capturing 24p as Normal, using Compressor to remove pulldown, editing in 23.98, then using Compressor to do reverse telecine' - is better than - 'shooting 24p, capturing as Normal, editing in 29.97, and saving back out normally'?

Hope that made sense.

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

Re: FCP HD--shot in 24p normal  help me plssssse

24p - better just capturing and editing normal (29.97)
24pa - better for 23.98 sequence editing for film or 24 fps DVD. This mode provides a slightly higher quality mode than 24p and does it in real time as you capture to the computer (i.e. removes advanced pulldown)
24p to 23.98 sequence requires more time and steps.

You're getting compressor (which is just that, for compressing or changing codecs) and Cinema Tools confused. Cinema Tools is used to remove standard pulldown such as used on 24p. Neither adds pulldown.

If you were doing advanced effects work such as rotoscoping, 24pa offers a way to get pure frames with no field artifacts. This also reduces the number of frames you have to manipulate and save.
