FCP HD question

I was told today by someone at work that I would need a HD card to output to HD from FCP HD is that true? He said upgrading to HD is only 1/2 of it and that I would have to install a whole new video card that could handle HD.

Re: FCP HD question

Well, that depends on what you want to do with your HD.

FCP should be able to edit and print it back out to tape from whatever camera you shot it on without any problem.

You should also be able to generate hi def quicktime files without any problems that should be playable on any faster computer.... transferring them around could be a bit of a mess though as they'll get very large very quickly.

Re: FCP HD question

Panasonic's AJ-HD1200A allows you to capture & record via Firewire. It uses a DVCPROHD codec, which is compressed. I'm not sure as to how much the compression actually is.
So if you want to capture full res HD, you'll need a new capture card from AJA, BlackMagic, etc.
However, the new exciting thing that's recently making headway is SATA. You can have your (actual) film/HD transferred or telecined at full resolution, to a Firewire drive. Then transfer those files to your SATA raid, which is VERY cheap at SCSI speeds, and have your HD fully playable.
Of course, you'll have to have someone output it for you, from your drive. Saves the cost of buying a deck.

Hope that helps.
