FCP HD or Ver 5.0??

Hi All

Quite new to this , so be gentle!

Im waiting for delivery of my new MPB 17 and am considering going for a HVX as well. I have always used PCs and so the whole shift to Apple and its software is a very new thing for me. I have always edited using Avid Xpress on mini DV and so am looking into getting FCP for when my shiny new laptop arrives.

This may sound like a stupid question, but what is the difference between FCP 5.0 that comes with the Final Cut Studio package, and Final Cut Pro HD?

I know the obvious answer would seem that the HD version is specifically designed for HD footage, but the tutorials I've seen on 5.0 say that it can handle HDV and DVCPRO HD as well too? Can anyone clear this up for me?

Sorry if I'm being a bit fick...but like I say, I've never used Mac stuff before :(

Thanks for any help

P

a little more detail on what Barry said - you NEED version 5.1.x (5.1.1 is the latest) in order to have an Intel native version for that Intel based laptop. Final Cut Studio is the only way Final Cut Pro is sold now, so you've got to drop coin for the whole kit, not just the FCP app alone.

The Final Cut HD Express that comes with the computer, if you went with that option, is typically geared towards prosumers, people who might do some editing but only as a hobby. But Final Cut Studio/Final Cut Pro 5.1 is geared towards those who aim for professionalism.

The problem with the workflow of the HVX200 to the new Macbook Pros is that Apple decided to do away with the PC Card slot that you could insert a p2 card directly into with the ol' Powerbooks. So you are either going to have to get something like a p2 store to hold all your clips, or you can look into some sort of PC Card expansion slot.

I know that Final Cut Pro Studio is more expensive than just FCP used to be, but you're going to end up using most all the software in the editing suite.

Final Cut Studio is completely worth the purchase. Also consider adding Shake to it now that it was dropped to $500.

Tru dat. Although, it will take you some time to learn how to use all these programs. I suggest Apple Pro Training Series books.

Essentially, both versions(4.5 and 5.1) can handle HD and DVCPRO HD editing...
Main difference is FCP5 has multiple camera editing option(I dont know what s the big deal about it, I am 4.5 user and do multiple camera editing all the time)...
FCP4.5 had Compressor and A.Pack seperately(APack compresses your aiff files to AC3 to use in DVDStudioPro), whereas FCP5 doesnt have Apack seperate(included in compressor2 i believe)...
FCP5 is the only way for somebody who wants to use Intelchip Mac laptops as far as I know...

Thanks guys - big help all of you!

Glad I came across this site, its encouraging to nkow there is a place people can come to bounce the new technology off of. :)

Actually "Studio" is only about $200-$300 more than FCP-HD was by itself. So you get a ton of extra software for a really great bargin.

And FCS 5.1 is THE package to get, priod.
