FCP HD crashed ten times yesterday - HELP!

My FCP HD was doing something absolutely whack yesterday. I would start capturing (2:3:3:2, 16/9) and then it would crash after capturing a few seconds. Then when I tried to run the program again, it became apparent that the crash had caused my entire hard drive to fill up. I'd look at my capture scratch and lo and behold, the few seconds of capture before the crash had created a 20 GB+ file. It did this over and over again. Has anyone experienced this, and if so how did you get around it? If you haven't experienced this, do you have any idea what MIGHT be causing this, and what you might DO to fix it? PLEEZ HELP!!!

If FCP is crashing do a Repair Permissions (Disk Utility) on your drive.
Trash your FCP prefs (Apple technote steps through this on their site)
Do a memory test on your machine. Hardware test on one of your system disks.
Try creating a new project without other clips or sequences.
