FCP HD - Capturing 24Pa SD at HD rez?

Twofold question - Can you capture 24Pa SD at HD rez, to be edited in an HD project; and if so, does it even make any sense to do so, regardless of delivery medium? Just downloaded 4.5 today, and I see where you can uprez, but it seems to me it would make more sense to start at the higher rez....

Just capture your DV footage normally via firewire, then uprez it using some tool like S-Spline Pro, or use the WM9 encoder.

All the best

I forgot to mention that S-Spline takes only still images. So, you would have to export your footage to a sequence of images, then use S-Spline Pro.

As for the WM9 enconder, you will need to do this on a pc.

All the best

Export your images and apply S-Spline Pro to the still images? This sounds difficult. Can someone explain the workflow? Barry Green, don't you have experience with S-Spline? Best- Mike

To use S-Spline Pro on video, you must export your video to a sequence of uncommpressed image files (like ".tiff"). You can than run the pictures as a batch through S-Spline Pro. Be prepared to wait. On my 1 GHz iMac with 512MB i waited about 11 seconds per frame uprezing from anamorphic DV to HD resolution. S-Spline Pro will than spit out a new sequence of frame numbered sequentially which you can import into something like Quicktime Pro and turn back into a video file. Before you do this though, you need to really consider if HD rez is something you need. It takes unbelievable amounts of hard drive space and time. Another thing to think abouut is that many post houses will use a hardware system to uprez your DV and put it on an HD tape which could potentially save time and $. Just a few things to think about. In practice S-Spline is actually very easy to use if you're patient enough.
Hope that helps
