FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

In the past, I've happily imported songs from iTunes into both FCP and FCE. Now, I've just gotten a brand new Powerbook with the latest iTunes, and I've upgraded to FCP HD 4.5 and I can no longer import stuff from my iTunes library into FCP. Any solutions?

Re: FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

If they're songs you bought from itunes music store, they're protected "m4p" files. Now... while there are ways of converting them to usable files using programs such as "hymn", it blurs the line of illegal copyright infringement and consumer rights for a product you purchased.

Just FYI

I burn those songs I want to use in my FCP projects to CD. They then import into FCP without any problem.

Re: FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

Wasn't someone saying something in an earlier post about being able to use compressor and get around the copyrighted songs? Now that anyone would want to do such a thing!

Re: FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

The tracks I'm using are not from the iTunes store. They are from a "laugh track" CD for a video project. The CD is one of those "buy out" situations (it cost me $145 for one CD) so you have the rights to use it in your projects. Ironically, I CAN'T use it in my project. I imported the CD into iTunes then tried to go to FCP from iTunes. Right now, I have the tracks I need in FCP directly from CD, with is a waste of space.

Try doing a converstion using Quicktime [under file:import]. Then do a "save as" and choose ".aiff". That's worked for me in the past.

Everytime I've used an ".mp3" [like you get in iTunes] in FCP, I get a weird, rythmic "click". That's when I started doing the QT/Aiff solution.

My 2¢ worth.

Re: FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

I'll give your idea a try. Thanks. Sometimes, the wierd click you described goes away when you click on the clip in the time line and hit render.

Here's another problem. I had a huge slide show I did in iMovie - several hundred slides. On my G4 upgraded Blue and White tower iMovie crawled. So to send it to tape I sent it to Quicktime. In the Quicktime Player, everything was wonderful. I opened it up in Final Cut Express and no sound. I tried everything. I couldn't try it on FCP HD because that computer can't run that software (I have it on my Powerbook).

Any ideas why there'd by no sound in FCE when it was there in Quicktime Player? (I could see the waveforms in the timeline)

Re: FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

Try rendering the audio. iMovie uses a different format than standard in FCP. Or if you can do an audio Mixdown that is great too.

Re: FCP HD and iTunes: Not cooperating?

this may sound weird but try dragging the song to your desktop then see if you can import it in FCP from the desktop. I had to do this the other way around to get some music that I made on a drum machine to play in iTunes. Is your music an AAC or AIFF file?
