Look for FCP 6 at NAB 07. Not sure what will happen in the mean time. You won't find any REAL info about any Apple product until Apple announces it. In fact, MOST of the Apple rumors I've heard this year have proven to be false. Apple is a very sealed up corporation and nothing gets out before they want it to get out. They don't even tell us trainers anything about anything, even training and testing, until the official announcements and press releases are made.
I do expect, just my own speculation, that we'll see some kick ass upgrades between now and when FCP 6 comes out. And expect FCP 6 to kick ass, too. I was at Apple's offices a few weeks ago in NYC. Even though I take all Apple rumors, even internal ones, with a large grain of salt, I do expect FCP 6 to blow people the hell out of their boots.
And the replacement coming for Shake, well, the moment you hear an announcement, hold on, it's going to be HUGE, as far as I can ascertain on my own experience and sources.
Again, nothing is for sure until Apple goes public. Everything else is just rumors and speculation, flip a coin.
Last rumour I heard, but never seen anything develop from it, was that they would release some kind of hardware accelator that you could get (ala the Mojo). So fully functional as software only, but the ability to inject it with some steroids.
Replacement for Shake? Say it ain't so! That will be a crying shame if Shake is killed, regardless of what comes in its place. Kind of wish Apple hadn't bought it in the first place then if they are just going to kill it. Though that would certainly make the whole price drop on it a lot more clear to me. But like you said, you never know with Apple until they formally announce it, so here's hoping.
Nope, the hardware add-on deal is a rumor, I can tell you for sure right now. Apple will always rely on it's built-in hardware and software. They have some very nice strategies that give peformance boots without paying for extra hardware.
I actually think it's a shame that Avid has to force you to pay for extra hardware for performance that other NLE's give without it.
Shake was announced it was at it's end already. Apple announced something was coming to replace it. From what I understand, what replaces it will blow your socks off.
Remember that Shake is very outdated programming code, very out dated user interface, hasn't really had a proper overhaul for a long time now. It's way past due, dispite how powerful and widely used it is. So this is a very good thing!
Shake is a very solid program and really has not needed any kind of overhaul. At least for its purpose as a true compositing program. Now, if you want to dumb it down so that non-compositors can try and composite, yes it is way out dated and not very good. It certainly doesn't say fit into the whole Final Cut Suite ideas where its quite simple to learn and use all the applications. But that doesn't mean its not one of the finest compositing tools out there for those that are real compositors and know how to use it. I've seen many of my collegues do wonderful things with it (not a compositor myself, so I won't try and claim I have the skill set to actually do great things in compositing). I didn't know it was official that they were killing it. I may certainly go and snag a copy then to archive incase I ever wish to use it then.
Now this doesn't necessarily mean its replacement won't be good, but frankly, when a tool so strong is already out there, I really don't feel like learning new software. Okay so maybe the new one has some nice presets, great, but so what. Learn how to code and program and Shake will do what you want it too. The only thing I'd leave Shake for is something from the Discreet lineup.
Anyway, if its on its last legs then its on its last legs, that's life. It's certainly a sad day in my eyes.
The reality is, as powerful as Shake is, it is not the only player out there, and the code is ancient. A rewrite of the code to take advantage of Apple's latest graphics capabilities (in the OS and the hardware) will make Shake even more powerful. It's also rumored to have more integration with, look more like, and be included with the other apps in the Final Cut Suite. It's all rumors. But Shake's code honestly is very out of date and hard to upgrade at this point in time. What comes out to replace it will be very cool, very powerful, and not lose anything Shake already has going for it.
As I use Shake to pay my house note, there are a bunch of improvements I'm looking forward to. What will replace it (be that Shake 5, or something with a whole new name, Apple won't say which) I am confident (after spending time at Apple's offices in NYC a few weeks ago) it will rock.
"Learn how to code and program and Shake will do what you want it too."
This is exactly what Apple is doing. And it'll be much more than new presets, trust me, it's going to really rock. It's a happy day!
