FCP Edit to Tape

Right now i have a problem laying off my tape to Fuel TV using edit to tape. Im operating on FCP 4.5 hd and OSX 10.4.8. I'm also using a canon optura 20 to lay the tape off (which might be the problem itself)

In Fuels guidelines they need the tape to start recording at aprox. 01:00:00:00.

Ok so i make my timeline and go to Sequence Settings and make the timeline start at 00:58:00:00 and add in a 2 minute slug. Once the 2 minute slug ends it is at exactly 01:00:00:00 and my ntsc bars and tons and segment start, don't have a problem there.

My problem occurs when i open my "edit to tape" window and start to black encode my tape. The black encoding starts at 00:00:00:01 not 00:58:00:00. Why?

I set my in and out points on my timeline as:
IN= 00:58:00:00:00
OUT= 01:10:49:13

I set my in point on "edit to tape" in the lower left hand corner at 00:58:00:00. Now why whenever i try to black encode my tape it doesnt start at 58?

I don't think a VX2100 would do it either. You need a device that supports preset timecode so you can dial in the TC that you want on the deck. For example, set the TC on the deck to 00:58:00:00 let it record for 15 seconds or so then stop the tape, rewind it, tell FCP to start recording at 00:58:10:00 (give yourself some pre-roll room), and away you go.

Granted I've never used the "Edit to Tape" feature on FCP, but I've done a "digital cut" on Avid a number of times and I'm pretty sure they are basically the same feature.

yeah i understand the technique behind edit to tape as i've layed off multiple shows for the company i worked for in california on betacam and dvcam but they use dsr1500 and other high end decks. For my solo work i just figured that i could lay off any given timecode as long as i told FCP what it was. Now that i cant lay off certain timecodes im pretty much screwed haha. I'll lay it off anyways and tell them the dilema

If you could black & code a bunch of tapes to keep on hand (maybe rent a deck over a weekend and just feed it tapes) that might be a possible solution for the future. Of course I don't know if the camera will over write the existing TC once you hit "record" though or not.

Problem with "black& code", or striping, is that once you hit record on a camera, it generates new TC, so what you laid down is ignored. That's how DV cameras just work.

You do need a deck capable of an edit to tape work flow. Most all DV cams are not set up to do that. They'll just write their own TC no matter what in many cases.

Agree with Ben here, but for those situation where you really need those shining reds...
Then upsampling is the way to go.

But - as mentioned before, check the result on at least a TV before you go crazy and mess up your images. The image on your computerscreen is a proxy an therefore not what you want to make critical color decissions from (like bringing down the reds because of apparent blockyness...)
