FCP crashing all the time

Hey,
I'm using FCP 6 from FCstudio, store bought, not a burn/bootleg.
Running on a Mac OS X, (mac Pro) version: 10.5.8 with 12GB Ram, a 2 x 3.2 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors, 1 Terrabyte HD and another 2T of external drives. Also a NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 graphics card...

editing a 1080p shot on HVX200 in 24pA, edit all works fine, got the correct timeline settings, etc...

my film is 39 minutes, and I've completed the edit aswell as all the sound files/tracks (about 17 tracks),
just now I'm adding the music from a cd the composer gave me, the files work fine - but whenever I try to render the audio - unless it's a 2 second (or very very quick) clip, then FCP will suddenly quit on me.

sometimes it's not just audio...if I go to render video (say, after adding a transition) it will crash on me 50% of the time.

heck, once FCP crashed on me when I was just moving audio clips around - to try and get it qued up with the shot I wanted it to start on, I didn't render or anything.

Could anyone please help, let me know what I could do to fix the problem..... I"m thinking it has to do with the fact that I have so many render files on my computer from this project (about 80 GB worth) ....but I'm afraid to delete them, thinking FCP would then not be able to read any of the video/audio that I rendered in the past.

Autosave vault is regularly deleted, I only keep 1-2 files at a time.

capture scratch is all saved on another HD (not external...the computer is regularly 1Terrabyte space, splitting itself into two 500GB HD's, the capture scratch video files are all on the one that the computer wasn't using for anything else)

Any help would be greatly appreciated....my producer (plus actors, etc...) are all looking forward to the film, and at this rate, I'm not sure how I could finish it if I can't render, or really do anything at all in FCP.

Thanks in advance!

I seems you are using your system drive as the scratch drive. Even if you RAID the system drive into two drives you are still using the system drive. That being said, have you trashed preferences?

thanks for the reply,

No I have not trashed preferences, since I wasn't sure which file it was and didn't want to loose everything or screw things up.

is it the ".prefs" file in the documents>library under "final cut pro user data" ?

or should I delete the "cache" files too? (in the same location on the HD as the .prefs file)

Google is your friend, GND. If you seek, you will find specific information for your exact version of FCP...Hint, LAFCPUG.

If that does not work, it could also be a conflict with other software or hardware. Did you upgrade anything recently? Install any plugins? Add (cheap) ram? Think back to when the problem began and you might see a pattern.
