Has any one taken the FCP Apple certified training(An Introduction to Final Cut Pro 5 )from themacstore.com in Seattle. I realize that it's not cheap, but wanted some first hand info on the 3day course pro/cons. Thanks

Are you trying to get certified? If so all you need is the book. I am certified and I just read the book. TIP: Don't worry about advanced shortcuts or very last chapters of the book. The test is very basic but very hard. Don't overlook the little stuff

If you want to learn Final Cut Pro subscribe to www.lynda.com. It is the best final cut studio resource I have ever seen by far. You will not only learn it you will become way better than most at it. Plus you can learn a whole lot of other stuff.
Check out some of the free tutorials they have.

Thanks, not looking for certification, just an intense hands on training to save me time in the learning phase of the software. It doesn't need to be specifically Apple, just quality training in FCP.

Ok, I have to do my rant here. Just humor me.

Do the book cover to cover. Nothing else will bring you up to speed in the basics of the tools than this book. "Saving time" on education is never a good idea. Things take a certain amount of time to learn, take the time to learn it right. It'll save you headaches down the road.

Classes do have value aside from wanting to take the test. Very few of my students actually need to get certified. Most are preping for new jobs, being students graduating from film schools using Avid and the new jobs requires FCP. Or pros already working, but changing studios from an Avid system to FCP.

Also, my classes cover stuff not in the book, and the sharing of expereinces between myself and students is of great value. Everyone edits in different ways, in different environments, has different problems we solve in class. Most of my students walk away with great professional network connections from other students. So don't discount the class as worthless only if you want certification. It has great value outside of the course material. No book or web forum can replace the live interaction with other editors.

The Apple book is the best quality training you'll get. I've done most everyone's tutorials, most are tips and tricks, all are valuable, few actually teach you the ins and outs of the tools so that you can build your own tricks. I stand by the book as the BEST way to initially learn FCP. Once you have that book down, you'll be editing like a real pro.

But what REALLY gets you up and editing like a super-editor is the advanced color and effects book in the same seriese (not the "advanced editing" book, that's a different book). And any level beyond level 1 certification does requite you attend the class. Why? Cause there's stuff you get out of the class you don't get out of the book.

lynda.com is great, but I don't see it as a replacement for doing the book cover to cover.

And keep an eye out for a book in this same APTS library in about two weeks, called the Encyclopedia of Special Effects. I got a sneak peak, it rocks! Also, December 5th release date of the Compressor Quick Reference (or something like that) in this same series of books. It's gonna rock, too.

And the Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System is also a MUST HAVE for any serious FCP user. It'll be updated at the end of 2007 for the newer systems coming out. But the current version is still very valid, and VERY valuable.

Ok, I'm done, back to work.

No, that's the old v.4.x book. I'm talking about the version 5 of that same book. It's "...Final Cut Pro 5", not "...HD". Vast differences! But the same Apple Pro Training Series library, though. There's 5 or 6 books in that series specifically for FCP. Best info anywhere.

Remember, Final Cut Pro HD is version 4.x, Final Cut Pro 5 is version 5.x, and they are very different in many ways.

Check here-

And I have always found that Books-A-Million on line, with my membership, is usually cheaper than anywhere else, including Amazon.com. Although they give you a free copy with the certification class.
