FCP can't initialize camera

I'm trying to dump footage off a cheap Sony Handicam camcorder that records onto small discs.

It's only got a USB out. I tried going into capture presets but only found firewire settings (and a uncontrollable device, i think) so is that why i can't import this footage?

FCP will only import with firewire?

Correct.

FCP will not import off of FW. Don't stick one of those miniDVDs into a slot loading drive (it could get stuck and destroy the drive). The footage on the disc is most likely of the DVD/MPEG2 variety which needs to be transcoded into a format FCP can recognize. I think you can use MPEG Streamclip for that.

You can import via Fire wire with a camera that has that capability. You can't however import over USB. You could play the disc in a DVD player and send the output to a Camera that has FW. Then send the Firewire to the comp.
