I am interested in purchasing some books/instruction manuals/how-to's for FCP 5. I have been looking at the authorized training materials done by Peachpit and I was wondering which ones were good, or waht they cover, etc etc.

i am looking at the Advanced Editing Tech. for FCP 5 or just the regular Intro to FCP 5, should i only get one or both?

any suggestions are welcome, even for other books, dvd's, etc.

the fact that noah knows this line of cameras AND fcp, puts this learning tool above the rest. im working through this dvd currently. this is a terrific format to learn from if you are dedicated.

For learning just FCP (and the related applications):

Totally go for the various Apple Pro Training Series books. Final Cut Pro 5 is a great introduction into the tools and menus and all the like of the program. So you should definitely start there. The Advanced Editing Techniques is what is says, its more about editing than learning the program specifically. But there is still plenty to take and learn from there. But before going with the Advanced Editing Techniques one, you might want to instead jump to the Advanced Color Correction and Effects in Final Cut Pro 5. This will directly give you more experience with more aspects of the software itself. Then perhaps go to the Advanced Editing Techniques as a third option (if you feel you need it).

Also, if you hope to do all the odds and ends of your production yourself, you might want to also look into the books for Soundtrack Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Motion, and Compressor. All the Apple Pro Training Series books will give you a good foundation in the programs. Then you can look to collegues, forums, and just general experience to take it all to the next level. Lastly, if you think you could also use some help setting up your suite, there is a solid book in the Pro Training Series called Optimizing Your Final Cut Pro System. Even experienced users have found new and helpful information in it.

If you're needing to learn FCP in association with a specific camera, then you might want to consider some of the DVD or book options available around here. Noah has mentioned his for the DVX. Barry Green and Jarred Land have excellent options if you needing help with the HVX.

cheers.
