FCP & Avid on same machine

This may sound like a ridiculous question but after a decade of working with computers I still can't answer simple questions!

Anyway, I'm curious to having both FCP and Avid MC 5 on a single Mac Pro. Is it as simple as giving each program it's own dedicated hard drive to run at it's best? If so, what would be the ideal size of each hard drive?

Thanks!

I believe Media Composer, just like Final Cut, is required to run off the System drive. I guess if you wanted to have a dedicated drive for each program, you could clone a basic OS X setup onto 2 drives then install each program separately on the respective drive. It sounds a little silly to do this to me....

Both programs should run fine even though they are on the same HDD....I have Premiere Pro and FCP and even though I never use P.P., it runs and my FCP never screws up.

You could even have both programs use the same external drives for capture and rendering. It will work, I promise.

I have both Avid MC5 and FCP running on the same drive in my MacBook Pro. Haven't had any issues/conflicts yet.

Have any of you ever had Premiere, Avid and FCP running on the same machine? I'm thinking of getting the Avid Production Suite in 6 months but I don't want to slow down my computer too much considering I have FCS 3 and Adobe Master Suite CS4 & CS5

I haven't tried running them all at the same time, but I have them all installed and there doesn't seem to be a problem.

I always advise to make a bootable drive for FCP and a separate bootable drive for Avid as software updates to the OS and/or Quicktime that might work fine for FCP may not work fine for Avid. For example, it took Avid a couple of months to release an update to support OS 10.6.6. Hard drives are dirt cheap these days so I'd rather be safe than sorry.
