anybody hook up a drobo to a mac and work in fcp off it? i'm thinking of a cheap an easy raid solution with 1080p footage. drobo seems like it's the one, with firewire 800 in it now. just wondering if anybody had any experience with it.

yeh i know esata is much faster, but my budget is extremely limited and fw 800 is built into my macbook pro. it should be fast enough for my purposes, i'm just wondering if editing off a drobo is fast and stable.

and thanks for the review. basically it's great for archiving, not so good to actually work from. good to know, any other recommendations for a fast raided drive to work from at something around the price of a drobo with a couple tb drives? won't have esata available so that's out of the question...

Drobo is for archiving...it isn't fast enough for editing. Well, you might get away with DV editing. But the way it RAIDS footage makes it a VERY poor choice. ARCHIVE only.

curious....
what machine are you running?

the eSata option isnt extremely expensive

break out card =$25
OWC enclosure =$70

+ your drives

i'm only running a macbook pro, i read that there is an express card adapter i can hook an esata drive to, but all my primary work is going to be done at my school lab where they have the mac pro systems, but none of them have esata ports. my thesis film is going to be shot all 1080p and i'm really want my work protected.

Drobo (gen 2 with FireWire) is being used for editing. Recently Chris Parker spoke at the Indianapolis FCP User Group about using Drobo in one of his projects: lovelesstheseries.tv

A RED ONE was used to shoot the series in full 4k resolution. A Drobo was on location and was used to capture footage from P2 cards. Later the RED files were converted to DVCPROHD for editing. Drobo was used for editing -- in this production, a single video stream.

Will this work for your projects? Maybe. It depends on your formats.
