FCP and Color

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
I can get to color no problem. But when I'm in color, and I color correct, then select all can render, it's fine. But when I try and send it BACK to FCP, it won't work...I am using FCP2. What's wrong?

Another thing, when I open up Color, it says my machine doesn't have 4:1:1. Will this lose quality when I finalize my project in Color?

Thanks.

Color correction and color grading in Color isn't really a back-and-forth thing. The workflow suggests you do everything you want to do in FCP and then send it out to Color for finishing. After you save it out of Color, you should be through.

So that's why CC is the last step :)

I was just testing it out that's all.

EDIT- What about the 4:1:1 problem?

yah, I have never seen the 4:1:1 error, The best workflow when using COLOR is to do what Blaine, leave till last so you can make all your shots look similar, and hit them all at the same time.

actually the workflow is lock picture in FCP > send to COLOR > send back to FCP for output. you DO have to send it back to FCP if you want lay it off to tape.

what do you mean by "it won't work"? can you see the new media rendered in Color but just have playback issues. if so, after sending back to FCP, you need to go back to Color, save and quit out of it. then return to FCP and you'll be able to playback just fine.

...if that's the problem you're having. if you are seeing old media when you send back to FCP, then you need to set the Render Queue to actually Render, let it bake, then send to FCP. Or, if you simply can't get the new fully rendered sequence to import into FCP via xml, then that's something i have not run into.

What codec is your source footage? If it's DV that **may** be what the 4:1:1 error is, but I'm not sure.

Color is built around the AppleProRes 4:2:2 codec, and according to the manual says it's not compatible with very many,.. but I've found that it is for the most part.

So let me get this straight?

You click the Render Queue tab in color,
click add all
click render
after all is rendered you click send to final cut and .... nothing happens?

It should bring up a few dialog boxes, then it'll open a new version of your previous project, this time with a new sequence of your project, this sequence should be set up as apple prores 422.

So where does it go wrong,.. and what version of color are you running? 1.0 - 1.0.1 or 1.0.2?

1.0.1 is SUPER buggy!

I've sometimes seen that color only sends some of the clips over to FCP after render. But the files are rendered in the Color-Render folder

Then I have sometimes had to manually drag the rendered files into FCP

it's litterarily a drag, but it works.

Before sending to color, you should make your timeline in a 4:2:2 colorspace. Like Prores.

Maybe that'll even kill you 4:1:1 problem. I don't think color was meant for 4:1:1.

Como there's a NEW sequence that says "[sequence name] from color" that gets inported into your project, it does NOT overwrite your exsiting timeline.

But when I send it back to FCP, NOTHING happens. Nothing. Color just sits there and the pop up window disappears when I click Ok to send back to FCP, but nothing happens.

But have you tried to go from a prores sequence from a timeline WITH ONLY ONE TRACK playing at any time, BEFORE exporting to color?

Do a small test first! (like 3 clips)

My (quite definite) hunch, is that your problem lays in the timeline you export TO Color.
