FCP 7.0.3/Sony FX1 ProRES Capture Problem

I have a friend who has asked me to pull some footage from tapes on his FX1. For some reason, whenever I try to use a prores codec, it hangs FCP completely after several minutes of transferring. If I switch it over to HDV/AIC, everything captures fine.

I've tried many of the common things including:
- Trashing the prefs
- Creating a new admin user and trying that user
- Changing to a different scratch drive
- Repairing permissions

Basically everything I can think of has been attempted. I have noticed that it seems to hang in approximately the same place each time. That said, I can capture just fine through that same piece of tape with a different codec. Im at a loss on this one. I'm planning to try a different firewire cable next but it's the same cable that's reliably capturing it to AIC.

Any ideas? Maybe my Prores settings need tweaked? All of the source footage is 1080i.

Could be too much data rate all in one step- I'd capture to AIC if that works and then transcode to ProRes- not a big amount of footage so take the path of least resistance...

Thanks Noah. You mentioned data rate which is something I hadn't considered. I had the Firewire coming in and was also capturing to a firewater drive on that same chain. Switched it over to a USB drive and that seemed to solve my issue. I can't believe that one hadn't crossed my mind until you mentioned it. Such a simple answer, boy do I feel foolish. Should have started with the simple stuff first.

Thanks again!

Yeah I should have mentioned that- your capture drive and Firewire device on the same line will be completely overwhelmed at ProRes data rates. Good for you for figuring that out.

Thanks again Noah. Rookie mistake. Everything I've done in FCP has come from a memory card so this was my first run with tape. Lesson learned and committed to memory!
