FCP 5, Stuck at screen 1!

So I shot in scene 5 at 24 p, now on the first screen at starup, do I call it ntsc? because the setup description for "dvcpro hd - 720p24" says for frame rates of 23.98 fps??? So when I am choosing setup and I want to edit the dvx100a 24p footage in 24p, do I choose "dvcpro hd 720p24" or "dv-ntsc"? Sorry to be a moron.

DVCPRO HD 720p24 is a High definition codec. You are only shooting standard definition DV-NTSC. I am not sure of the exact settings as I shoot DV-PAL and 25fps, but it is going to be some type of DV-NTSC

And now that that's solved, it won't recognize my camera... it's not the dvx or the chord because I can watch footage through the camera in imovie no problem, but fcp just says "not detected"? Any help?

Try turning everything off and then on again, computer, camera and FCP. You often have trouble if you start FCP without the camera all wired up and ready. The camera must be on and in VCR/playback mode. Is FCP prompting you that the camera is missing as the program loads? BTW, it is rarely necessary to actually restart your computer, so try just restarting FCP first.

If that fails:
Is your device control setup correctly?
Go to "Final Cut Pro" menu - top left corner of screen...
From there you can try Easy set-up
...or choose Audio/Video Settings

That should take you into the menu you need to enter the camera's specifications.

I'll have to re-think if that doesn't work. When exactly does it say "not detected?"

I did all of the above... and tried re-setting it in the menus and now just nothing happens at all, I did this:
Hook up the camera to your system via firewire.

Make sure camera is turned on and is set to vtr mode(vcr mode as opposed to record mode)

turn on Final Cut.

Open Audio/Video settings. Click Device Control Preset check Firewire NTSC.

click Video Playback check Apple Firewire ntsc(780x480).

if not, click refresh a/v devices.

And now it just opens the program and never recognizes taht it's hooked up at all. But again, same chord and camera, working 100% with imovie. I'm lost...

And in the audio video settings the video playback reads: [Missing] Apple FireWire NTSC (720x480)

Try changing the Firewire protocol to "Firewire Basic" in the menu I mentioned above.

Also, do you have anything else attached via firewire, external hard drives etc? That can also cause conflicts. Unplug them if possible and try the process again. Remember to proper "eject" or dismount the device first!

Any luck?

hmm... I have never had this many problems before. It is hard without seeing the system in front of me.

Double check the obvious - Are the wires all SECURELY plugged in at BOTH ends, camera powered up and in VTR mode. Does the manual give any pointers?

The only other thing I can think of is to delete your FCP preferences.

Follow all steps on this page:

Also take a look at this thread:

It may help out. Clearing PRAM could help.

Will try it, thanks! The connections are secure because it works fine into imovie and the manual is no help, even if I could understand 1/3 of the terms contained therein. Thanks for your help!

Yes, I tried all of the stuff on the apple site, to no avail... The system profiler recognizes the camera is there, and it works fine in imovie. Maybe I'll reinstall fcp...

Good idea. I have exhausted my ideas!

I better get to bed... getting late in England. Good luck!
