fcp 5: more title transition problems!

So the only reason I can find in previous posts AND the fcp manual is that there isn't enough of a handle to complete the transition, so I looked at all of my clips where it wouldn't let me place a transition, and most of them have far more time on either end than the transition requires (for a 20 frame cross disolve, I have 2 whole seconds of handle, but it still won't let me) any thoughts about this? it seems completely arbitrary!

Did you just dump the clips into the timeline straight from the browser? Sometimes with out assigning In/Out points on each clip then it won't let you apply transitions in the timeline.

nope, i've marked in/out for all of them, hence the fact that they should have sufficient handles... ???

Do you have things on the audio tracks that are linked to the video tracks? And are they the same length?
