FCP 5 HD Edit

Can HD video be edited in Final Cut Pro 5? If so, what should capture settings/timeline settings be? And if I get the footage on a disc rather than straight from the camera, what do I need to have my settings be?

James, There are a lot of unanswered varaibles buried in your question here.

FCP5 can edit HD. Open a new project. Create a sequence. Click on the sequence and press Command+0. Load a sequence preset (720 24p, 1080 60i...etc). I am assuming that the footage will come on a data disc. copy the data to your scratch disc and then drag and drop footage into file browser. From the file browser, you can scroll over to the Frame Size, Frame Rate, Compressor settings to find out exactly what kind of footage you are dealing with. Then set the sequence to match(before editing).

"HD VIDEO" is a VERY broad term. HDCAM? HDCAM SR? D5? HDV? DVCPRO HD? AVCINTRA? AVCHD? There are more formats of HD than you can shake a stick at.

FCP 5 supports DVCPRO HD and HDV...and the higher end formats like HDCAM SR and D5 via a capture card, capturing as uncompressed HD. ProRes is only available with FCP 6, as is AVCIntra and AVCHD support.
