I cannot get FCP5 to acknowledge that my camera is hooked up to the computer via Firewire. I have the camera "DV Out" set to on but FCP keeps telling me "Unable to Locate the Following External Devices: Apple Firewire NTSC (720x480)."
Does anyone know what I may be doing wrong and how I can get FCP to talk to my camera? Thanks!

Check and see if it works with iChat. While you are at it, make sure you have it iChat closed. Sometimes I have found that it wont give up control to FCP.

Specifically, I was told to do the following:

1. Navigate to Library -> Receipts on your main drive (not from your personal folder).

2. Remove all files of the form QuickTime*.pkg, where "*" is a version number. E.g. QuickTime600.pkg, QuickTime650.pkg, Quicktime700.pkg and QuickTime701.pkg. This simply tells your system that those packages are not installed.

3. Go to http://www.apple.com/quicktime/downloads and click on the "download Quicktime" link. DO NOT USE THE AUTOMATIC UPDATE UTILITY. Download QuickTimeInstallerX.dmg. Double click this file (probably on your desktop) and then invoke the installer by double clicking QuickTime701.pkg.

4. After your computer reboots, you should be able to restart FCP and see your camera.

So does my DVX100a with FCP4.5 on both Mac's that I have.

However, I am aware that Panasonic urges users to power off both camera and computer before connecting the Firewire cable to avoid damaging the camera's Firewire port.

I have always followed this to the letter. Some users may not and that can cause problems.

It turns out that my computer wasn't reading anything plugged into my Firewire 400 ports. I cut the power for about ten minutes, rebooted and now it can see the camera. I haven't tried to digitize anything yet but I am just glad it knows the camera is there.
