FCP 5.1 and Mac Pro questions

Yo guys, I recently purchased a Mac Pro (just gotta wait 4 weeks), however, I just also found out that with the new intel chip, a good deal of software that I have will need to be upgraded or it will run improperly/not at all.

Specfically I'm worried about FCP 5, since I don't have 5.1, and also since I edit with two other editors on projects who have their own systems with FCP 5, if I update will it make it so that we cannot transfer project files? I know that there there were different versions of 4 where this wasn't an issue but the second one upgraded to 5 we all had too.

I don't want to disrupt our setup, I also don't want to get a new already very expensive computer, only to find that most of my software doesn't run properly and I need to buy a bunch of expensive upgrades.

Can anyone help me with info on these issues?

Thanks a bunch,

you need everyone on 5.1.x for easy file transfer.

otherwise, you're talking about using XML to move projects around, and that can get dicey - esp. as older than 5.1 has some problems with XML.

Get everybody up to date is the easiest answer.

So the files will be able to be transferred without being updated, there'll just be issues? I'm unfamiliar with XML, what is it exactly? I gotta brush up on my technical knowledge...

The crossgrade to 5.1 is only $49, get everyone upgraded. It's a much nicer version, too. Will save everyone involved a ton of headaches.

FCP is an XML based NLE. You can do XML imports, but it's a work around I try to avoid. Get everyone updated, you'll be glad you did.
