FCP 4 capturing problems

I'm having a lot of problems captuing footage I shot 24P Advance. I'm using FCP 4 and I have a Mac G5 OS 10.3.9, 768 MB memory and I'm using an Iomega 250 GB external HD as the scratch disk. FCP will periodically quit when I'm trying to capture footage and I need to restart the computer. What could be wrong? Do I need more memory?

You need at least a full meg of RAM, two if you can afford it. 768 honestly is not going to cut it at all.

I can assure you that adding that RAM will boost FCP's performance and stability a great deal. Let me know how it works out!

I added the 2 GB (now the total memory is 2.5 GB) and I'm still having the same capturing problems. Any other suggestions?

Is that Iomega drive USB or Firewire?

What camera are you capturing from, I assume the DVX100?

Download "FCP Preferences Attic" and trash your FCP prefs (don't use the back-up feature until FCP is stable).

Run Disk Utilites on all drives, Disk Warrior doesn't hurt, either.

Upgrade to the latest OS and versions of FCP-HD. What version of QTPro are you running?

Any chance we could get you upgraded to FCP 5.1.1? Simply cause it's really stable.

The iomega drive is Firewire.

Yes, I'm using DVX100.

I downloaded Attic and trashed FCP prefs (this seems to have fixed it!).

I would like to upgrade to the latest OS and FCP 5.1.1, but I can't drop $1000 on that stuff at the moment.

FCP Preferences Attic seems to have solved my problems. FCP isn't crashing anymore and I was able to capture an entire tape. Now I just need to do 8 more. :)

Thanks for your help, BenB!
