Im recording in 24p and 60i ( for slo motion )

No doubt i need your dvd!!... Will I get better quality if I remove the pulldown in CinemaTools vs 29.97

also if i record 60i...Can I still use that 29.97 time line for the 60i footage

Thanks Noah!! I will be buying the DVD soon!!

I just posted this for someone else, forgive me for giving it to you too but it saves time.

Coupla things...

1) DVX ALWAYS shoots to tape at 29.97. The tape won't handle 24 fps as a singular timecode.

2) Never capture in 24 fps off the tape.

Ok, THAT said:

READ THIS!!: http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/index.html#24pRecording

Once you understand that you'll be better for it. Since you shot 24p you'll want to capture using the standard DV/NTSC 48/29.97 capture setup. You'll also want to edit in a 29.97 timeline.

There are ways to get it to 24fps, but you should have shot 24pA if that's what you really wanted to do. Yes, you can use Cinema Tools to remove the cadence in 24p mode to get it to 23.98 -- but someone will get hurt. Read the manual about that and duplicate the capture files.

If you shot 24pA you'll still have to capture in 29.97, but it is less clear. The capture preset says something about advanced pulldown removal. It still captures in 29.97 but as it does it removes the cadence (if you are unclear about what cadence means you haven't read the first link I gave you -- so go read it) on the fly leaving you with 23.98 footage. However, you CANNOT use the advanced cadence removal when you shot 24p mode on the DVX.

I hope that helps a little.

Now... get it out of your head that you will get "BETTER QUALITY" if you do one thing or another. You shot it in 24p so that's what you get. The 'quality' is the quality. Removing combined frames (removing the cadence) will NOT get you 'better quality.' It WILL get you different timecode.

You have to make a decision now that you should have made earlier (not saying you didn't but NOW is the time to get that out in the open).

1) Will this be edited in 23.98 or will this be edited in 29.97??
2) Why did you shoot 60i for slowmo?
2a) What were you planning to do with it?
2b) How were you going to slowmo it?
2c) What timecode were you planning to put the slowmo into?

I've got a technique that will take 60i and will split the fields making it twice as slow -- and then you can take THAT 30p footage and conform it to 24 and make it REALLY slow (and very nice)... but takes a lot to explain.

Let's get you building the cake... then we'll ice it.

Thanks!!
Im filming a series of moto cross events the first two events I filmed In 24p. and 60i for slo mo.

1) Will this be edited in 23.98 or will this be edited in 29.97??
I "THOUGHT" session was in 29.97 being I shot 24p and editing would be at 29.97??

2) Why did you shoot 60i for slowmo?
Slow Motion for clear moto cross scenes

2a) What were you planning to do with it?
The final product will be on DVD and Internet

2b) How were you going to slowmo it?
60i slowed to ( I believe it was 42% )

2c) What timecode were you planning to put the slowmo into?
I shoot 60i for slo mo, FCP session is not set up yet- What would you recommend

Thanks for the help!!

This is were im stuck, I want to get the 24p look fiming the Moto Cross series can this be done in post if I shoot in 60i, I am not a big fan of 60i but for this application ( Moto Cross ) im stuck. Ok... so your final will be 29.97. To answer your original question, 24p will be edited in a 29.97 sequence.

But here's another option to think about...

Next time you do this figure on editing in 23.98. But then you'd want to shoot 24pA and on another tape shoot 60i for the slow motion stuff.

Then... capture the 24pA stuff using the advanced pulldown cadence removal preset and the 60i stuff with normal DV/NTSC setting.

Take the 60i material and do the following:

http://homepage.mac.com/captmench/60iTO24p.mov

This technique requires SHAKE, but it can be done in Compressor with a little thought. (The link I provided for doing that in compressor doesn't work anymore but again... a little thought and you can figure it out.)

Then it can all be edited together on a 24 fps (23.98) sequence. But for now you are kind of stuck with editing it all in 29.97.

Good luck,
