Favorite submarine movies

Top 3:

1. Up Periscope (because I read the book as a kid and loved it and then saw the movie and it was "special")

2. The Hunt for Red October (lotsa buzz about Clancy "guessing" and getting the top secret technology right)

3. Crimson Tide (because I love any film where the two main characters are at odds and neither one is totally right and neither one totally wrong)

Worst of the worst:

1. U-571 (if only because the insulting historical treatment of real events in this film - the British capture of U-110 - would be akin to a U.K. production company making a film about how all of the heroic police and firefighters in NYC on 9/11 were British - and I so love historical revisionists, and those who start to believe the crap they put on the screen is reality. For an accurate summary of the true story of U-110, see: http://www.lawbuzz.com/tyranny/u571/u571_ch1.htm)

Ahhh ... I feel so much better now ...

I'm going with "Crimson Tide"... only because of where I was when I saw it.

In '96 I had the opportunity to shoot a documentary aboard the USS Birmingham, out of Pearl. Spent a week at (under) sea... what a blast. Anyway, the last night aboard, I had some free time and was asked by a rather nice looking female lieutenant, (fleet public relations type), to watch a movie in the Captains galley (or whatever that small room where he eats is called).

One of the selections we picked was "Crimson Tide"...

Totaly wild watching that film while onboard a submarine identical to the one portrayed in the film.
