Favorite Film Making Magazines

American Cinematographer is pretty much the end all...I'm sure there's a few other good ones, maybe ICG....haven't read too many of those though. Go with the AC mag and you won't be disappointed.

I've subscrived to Videomaker for 2 years and I've found the articles to be redundant. The reviews were pretty much the same (and maybe less detailled) than on camcorderinfo.com, so I let the subscribtion end.
I might check for American Cinematographer though.

American Cinematographer is THE filmmaking mag, IMHO. I have been reading it for a very long time and I still get excited when a new issue arrives. It is only one I pay to get these days. I get the free Videography edition each month, but it is just a shadow of what it used to be. The same with Millimeter. I still get the email updates from the C-Pop group and read individual articles from those different mags. DV mag is not what it used to be either, and I just get individual articles on line now and again. Moviemaker, of the broad themed mags, is not bad. Filmmaker magazine is also not bad, for a broad themed, general filmmaking mag.

I've only recently started reading American Cinematographer and it is amazing, even for novices and amateurs like myself. True, it initially seems like a poo-storm of jargon and it can be difficult to see how their focus on gazillion dollar hollywood production has any relevance to guys with dslrs BUT... keep reading and you really start to get a practical knowledge of the basics of shot-matching, lighting, mood creation, and the basic questions every image maker should be asking themselves. And while the gear they talk about is way beyond even most pros, the concepts are scalable right down to where to put your china ball.

Also it really helps that its a trade magazine, so they don't really give a damn about upping their circulation--less pandering to hype and trends and more telling it like it is (though with a definite bias of course)

Is there a 'sound' magazine for filmmaking... At NAB I picked up a couple of magazines that had 'sound' as the target area, but only "Sound on Sound" seemed to have articles that were not just fluff pieces. But that may have just been a 'show' special... and that magazine wasn't specifically 'filmmaking'...

This was my experience as well. Not only are the articles redundant, they're superficial. Very little meat-and-potatoes information gets presented.

I Have the online subscription (shipping to spain is expensive) and AC is a great read! They also have articles about independent movies.
