Mine is many of the usual suspects, of course: Hawks, Ford, Hitch, up to the Coens.

Though he does not have a really long track record, I really like Sean Penn, if for no other reason than he got Nicholson to actually act again.

But my current favorite director I haven't seen in any other list, so I'll throw him in:

Pedro Almadovar

Not one person listed DePalma ? (Blasphemy)

Great list Blaine. I suppose if I added 5 more I'd have chosen at least:
02 James Cameron
11 John McTiernan
13 Michael Mann
14 Mel Gibson

Wow... Well I am not going to put them in any order, because a lot will just depend on my mood and what I'm feeling that night. Regarding what I could learn from them, there are different things I take from each director, so my list:

01. Steven Spielberg (The man is a legend above all others, he takes you away)
02. Quentin Tarantino (The best writer / director working today)
03. Martin Scorsese (Italian American Culture on the big screen)
04. Alfred Hitchcock (Who can dispute?)
05. John Carpenter (Horror master who has gone downhill lately, but legend)
06. Woody Allen (Hardest working director in Hollywood, no argument needed)
07. Francis Ford Coppola (The man is a composer and Apocolypse is his opus)
08. Oliver Stone (Cultural, Shocking, Historical, and intoxicating)
09. Rob Zombie (The most potential of any director I've seen in 10 years)
10. David Fincher (great scripts, great efx, great acting, but the buck starts here)
11. Sam Raimi (His early stuff inspired me, his newer $ stuff proves he's got skills)
12. Rob Reiner (I'm sentimental to the guy, think that he puts out a quality film)
13. James Cameron (The man does a movie every ten years, and they're all gold)
14. George Lucas (because I'm a f*cking fanboy)
15. Greg Araki (Indie and jagged as hell, and not afraid to hold punches)
16. Darren Aronofsky (Pi was a brilliant debut, Requiem solidified him as legit)
17. David Mamet (no one directs Mamet scripts like David Mamet, wonder why?)
18. M. Night Shyamalan (the second best writer / director working today)
19. Clint Eastwood (minimalistic style is beautiful)
20. Robert Redford (A River Runs through it takes the prize)
21. Orson Welles (We know Kane was great, big deal... Touch of Evil, nuff said!)
22. Mimi Leder (Exploitive as anything, textbook, unoriginal, but yet effective)
23. Sam Mendes (Either he is w/ the best or he has talent... I'll take the latter)
24. Barry Levinson (He is original, touching, and inspiring in all his work)
25. Kevin Costner (Arrogant, yes, but talented and motivating? Yes!)
26. Mel Gibson (He's lost me lately because of politics, but Braveheart made me a fan for life)

I don't know how ya'll were able to cut down to just ten... I have 26 and that took leaving people off who I think deserve to be there. Ultimately I listed the people who when they put out a film I will see it because of who directed it (or if they're dead, I have seen their stuff because it is their stuff)
