faux music videos for practice and samples

I've been wanting to get into doing music videos for fun for a while now and I'm not really sure how to get started. I was thinking about trying to get some local bands to let me do some music videos for them for free, but there's not very many good bands around here.

Now, I remember seeing Matt Mcdermitt's (don't know how it's spelled) music videos that he made to other people's music. I think that's an excellent way to not only get expirience, but show clients what you can do. But what are the legal ramifications of this? Are you allowed to use other people's music to show what you can do and actually post it on the web?

Re: faux music videos for practice and samples

This kind of question has been asked a million times and the only good answer is, ask a lawyer.

If you want to hear our advice, it only matters if someone is willing to sue you for it... same thing goes for wedding videos, your own movies, whatever... music used in them is used at your own peril if permission hasn't been obtained. You can do whatever you want and it's doubtful they'll sue someone for something as small as that and will garner them little profit and poor publicity.

The best answer though if you really want to cover your ass legally is to ask a lawyer about it. The law says this: It is a suable offense to use someone's intellectual property without their permission for your own personal gain. Whether or not they sue you is the question... if you're asking if it's okay... that's entirely up to you. The Verve thought it was okay to sample a Rolling Stones song... Vanilla Ice thought it was okay to sample a Queen song... look what happened to them...

Yeah Ok, I guess a common sense answer is all I'm going to get without talking to a lawyer.

I guess nobody's going to waste their time and money suing a small time music video director wannabe for making their own video out of a song... of course the music industry has been rather evil lately.

I also heard that Disney sued a school for putting Mickey & Minnie on a bulletin board in a school hallway.

That's not all "evil." If a company (or whoever) doesn't zealously defend its trademarks, it can lose them.

Tony, personal insults and rudeness like that are against the code of conduct here. Please be respectful or don't bother to post. I don't insult you. I ask the same in return.

Foul on the play.  Tony's posts have been removed.

No personal attacks, no insults, no name-calling.  Them's the rules.  Please respect them.
