Father Merrin, come! My Quicktimes are possessed!!

So here's a puzzler for you:

I am a TV Production teacher and my introductory classes are all shooting short films on miniDV. (Remember those?) We shoot using a Sony TRV-950 with audio capture from a shotgun mic through a Beachtek converter. Footage is captured through a Sony DSR-11 deck via Firewire onto a G4 eMac.

None of this may be relevant, but I put it out there anyway.

Now to the problem: put simply, the audio sounds different in Final Cut than it does when I play the source Quicktimes from the Capture Scratch folder.

The sound when played using QT player is all noise and very little signal: just scratchy whiny digital noise, with the faintest remnant of the original dialogue etc. In Final Cut, the audio still sounds a bit digitally "stepped on," but the signal is definitely there and will be fine once I put it through a round of Sound Reduction in Soundtrack Pro.

Before anyone says "That's impossible -- the source files are exactly the same; Final Cut works on Quicktime architecture (etc etc)" -- trust me -- I know this. Furthermore, I have tried this on different computers -- Intel and PowerPC; I have tried it on Final cut Express and Final Cut Pro; I am making no changes to the clip audio (or anything else) in Final Cut.

I'm used to performing all kinds of gyrations in the name of troubleshooting, and none of them are working. I keep saying to my students, "no, really, I've never seen anything like it, it's the most bizarre thing, I swear these files must be possessed..."

They are starting to roll their eyes, and I am starting to wonder if I'm losing my mind. Can anyone help? (I can email a few seconds of a possessed clip if anyone is interested.) Many thanks.

I'd go back to the tapes and recapture again. Also run a head cleaner on the capture deck before you do this.

Thanks -- I did try both of those things. Also capturing using different decks, cameras, etc. The biggest issue to me is the fact of the QT playing differently in QTPlayer and FCP -- how could that be?...
