Faster memory card?

Looking into buying a cheapie camcorder for an up coming shoot. Trying to figure out which SD card to get.

Will a class 6 card actually improve video quality vs a class 4 card?

On something like a kodak zi8 or the waterproof version.

Thanks!

No. Card speed will determine whether the card will work or not. For AVCHD cameras, Class 4 is enough for anything. For some cams like the GH1 with a higher-bitrate MJPG option, the manual recommends Class 6.

Faster cards are faster, but it's digital data so either the card will write the ones and zeroes, or it won't. If it works, it'll work every time, exactly the same. And if it doesn't work, well, it doesn't work so it's irrelevant.

I would strongly, strongly recommend spending the money on a better card manufacturer, rather than trying to get a faster class speed. If the choice was between a Panasonic Gold Class 4, or an Adata Class 10, at the same price, I'd get the Panasonic. If the choice was between a Sandisk Extreme Class 6 or a MonkeyData Class 10, I'd go for the Sandisk.

There are differences in card quality. Cheap cards are more prone to fail. Don't buy cheap media, buy the best you can possibly get. Manufacturer and reliability count for more than a few more points on the "class" scale, as long as the cards you're looking at are fast enough to store your camera's data.
