Fast motion

I posted this in another area and did not get a reply . So, sorry for the double post. I was wondering why I'm getting a trailing effect when I speed up 24p footage in Vegas? Is it the same concept of slowing it down? Should I have shot the scenes at 60 fps? The scene starts out at normal speed then speeds up to a close shot of the actors face. It looks pretty good but there is something weird about it. Does anybody have a clue to what the problem is? I would really appreciate any of your ideas or thoughts. Thank you.

Same problem

I'm having the same problem. I was to do fast motion video. I know thatif you shoot 24p with a 1/24 shutter speed, you can speed up the video to 200% (double it's speed) and you'll get 12p but I want to increase the speed by 1000% or 2000% or so. It's a fast dolly out. Is this possible without introducing artifacts and interlacing?
Thanks,
Paul DV

slower shutter speeds will result in increased motion blur. a clip would definitely be helpful so we can address your problem in the proper context.

Do you have AIM, MSN messenger, or yahoo where I could transfer the clip over to you?
Thanks,
Paul DV

so let me get this straight. if i want to increase the speed, 200% will give me 12fps, 300% will give me 8fps, 400% will give me 6fps, all the way to 2400% which will give me 1fps. but i dont want to do something like 360% cuz that would give me something like 6.66666666666666667fps and that just doesn't make sense, right? This is all if i shot 24p...
Someone correct me if i'm wrong.
Thanks,
Paul DV

Very simple problem. When you speed up a clip, simply right click on the event, and check the box (dissable resample). Viola problem solved :) I hope.

Maybe I'm completely off the boat, but I think that math is backwards ... a slower frame per minute should be slow motion ... if you're speeding footage up, then you're running MORE frames per second. So, if you're speeding up 200%, then you should have 48 frames per second, not 12.

I THINK what you're referring to is if something was shot in camera at 12 FPS, then played in a normal 24P timeline ... it would be sped up 200%. However, if you're working with 24FPS, and you're speeding it up ... well I've already covered that.

Thanks everyone. I will try Scharkys advice and if that does not fix it I will post a clip. But I have one more question. Does holding shift and dragging the frames faster result in the same effect as selecting the velocity env? Thanks again.

It sure seems to. Difference being, you can add points to a velocity envelope line.

Davgola, yes, your math is backward. Shooting at 1/24 will allow you to speed it up 200% and get back to a 1/48 shutter speed and the equivalent of 48fps.

I was talking in terms of FPS not shutter speed. I had no clue about shutter speed, but I think I figured it out. If you have a 1/24 shutter speed and double the footage speed, it would look like 1/48 and so on. Thanks for the reply though. You answered my shutter speed question!

In Barry's book, I think he says that the DVX can do 12 and 15 fps for fast motion.
Anyways, my understanding is that overcranking (more frames per second) is for slow motion. Undercranking is for fast motion.
Thanks,
Paul DV

is there anyway you can speed footage up in vegas past 4.000? Thats the highest it will let me go when typing the speed in or draging the clip to be faster.

you can only go up to 4.000 ? Is there anyway you can make it faster speed then that.

You can get up to 12x in a single pass:

4x using the playback rate as you've seen
3x using the Velocity Envelope (video only)

Combined will give you 12x.
