fast motion... what frame rate

ok....first of all i'm not sure if this is the right place to ask this question...

I know for smooth slow motion shoot in 60i and play in 23.97... but what about fast motion shot, like running and chasing... what frame rate is best quality to shoot it in.....

You mean "Babe Ruth around the bases" type effect?

Doing this intentionally is called "undercranking" where shooting at a slower frame rate effectively decreases the frames captured every second, therefore playing back in a sped-up motion.

DEPENDING on the situation, the best quality high speed would come from shooting anywhere between 1-15 fps.

If you could explain a bit more about your situation, I could give a little more detail.

hi, blkhark542
i'm using a dvx100b...... i'm not sure what u mean by final shot ?..but i'm trying to stay with 24p look....

for fast motion, i don't think it really matters what frame rate you shoot with since you're just going to be dropping frames once you speed it up in post. You could of course speed up 24p to 30 but the effect won't be too huge. I often have to do an "old movie funny fast motion" kind of thing and really any frame rate I use looks ok . The problem with slowmo is that you don't have enough material to work with if u shoot at 24 so people shoot in 30/60 to get some in-between frames.. with fastmo it's the opposite.. you're just dropping existing frames.. so if u shot at 1fps and played at 30, would be the same as if you shot 30fps, dropped 29 of those frames and played at 30 ..

I agree. You can't always add frames for slow motion (i.e. dvx and other non variable fr cams) but you can always delete as many as you want.

Just shoot normal and do it in post. I am sure there is probably some minor and unimportant difference when doing it in camera, but then again you are using a non variable frame rate cam anyhow

Careful though. Some NLEs will add motion blur to anything sped up. There should be a setting to make it not do that.

in premiere pro there's a "frame blending" that's always on by default - quite annoying.. definitely blurs stuff - i always turn it off

I too have a question along these lines...

I've attempted on several occasions to shot fast motion (rockets taking off), using scene 5. Even bracketing the shutter speeds I can't get a smooth frame showing the action... (slow-mo or otherwise). Of course the motion at 24P is blurry at best, but my stuff seems to break-up on top of the blurred frames... (you know... wacked out with interlacing lines and all...) I haven't been able to clean any of it up in post.

This is along the lines of this thread... isn't it?

Is that why when I render out stuff thats a hard cut it makes a 2 frame fade? Fookers. I knew something was up.

yeah probably .. this feature is really annoying me lately .. i did find one way that might work though .. i'll try it soon and will report back. premiere's project files are just XML so are easily editable and there is a <FrameBlend> tag that's true/false.. so a global replace of true -> false is really easy. should do it. the only problem might be with render previews... once you do this hack, you'll have to delete all your previews and re-render (otherwise premiere will be unaware of the change and you'll be confused as to why your previews are still blurry)
