Fast Editing

I've never dealt with one in any way. An interesting art form. . .I often wonder how they got to the video concept from the song's lyrics. As for the edit. . .it often seems random what shots are shown at what time. . .I'm guessing there's some deeper philosophical reason (on someone's part) for it.

It's historical... you'd have to trace back music video styles to see it, and you'd probably find that in the early nineties, when video was just becoming popular, fast cuts were in. Grungy bands did it to build energy and look artsy... that and you now had a much lower budget for creating video, so there was a learning curve. These were experimental shorts done by graphics people who had rarely, if ever, touched an editing system. And they were done on low budgets such that long shots were either not thought of in production or couldn't hold up to scrutiny for more than a few seconds. That's what people today watched and learned from. Now, at least for bands like this, we're in the nostalgia phase. People are trying to recreate what they remember.

That's what I tell all my clients- exploding instruments are a win. Which doesn't usually go over well, since I don't shoot music videos.

probably.

my fave thing about 80s vids is watching how uncomfortable some of the performers are with the camera. not all...some were pros and could play to it, but some seem like they have no idea what to do and think the whole thing is stupid.

by the 90s it seemed like theyd fixed all that...i dont know what changed/how it happened but every vid i can think of the band is rockin out and hammin it up like superstars. younger folks who grew up with the art form and took to it easily? label pressure? better directors? who knows.
