Fantom EXT. HDD....it's CHEAP!

Depends what you want and need it for- vast storage or high performance. I'd steer more towards G-Tech personally.

something like that? is it that much better? seeing as i can get 500 more gb out of the fantom for about 40 bucks more?...
also, that gtech that i linked doesn't even have firewire800 and only has a 8mb cache.

i would like vast storage, and high performance,.... i'd obviously take performance over storage if you think it makes that large a difference.

I am editing in FCP (hence the reason i posted in this forum) with a PPC g5 dual 2.5 ghz if it makes a diff.

thanks again

edit: or how about this guy? http://www.buy.com/prod/western-dig...0rpm-ethernet-10-100/q/loc/101/204211849.html

Well what sort of stuff are you cutting? HD or DV? I find the G-Tech drives to be the most reliable. Saving a few bucks or getting extra space is moot if the drive dies with all of your stuff on it. But anyways any of these drives will certainly work for DV cutting.

currently just DV from my 100a. Though, we are thinkin of purchasing a HVX.

and i agree about the drives dying. that's why i was hoping someone here would've had some experience with the Fantom. i want something reliable, with good storage space, that won't break the bank. (yeah, i know, pick 2 of the 3....)

Find out what type of internal HDD's it uses. The G-Tech's use Hitachi's which are pretty reliable from the get-go.

"Funny how the warranty ended (only 1 year which says a lot about the company) just before the drive died. I opened up the enclosure, which would void your warranty too but it didn't matter for me anyway. The hard drive that Fantom had in mine was manufactured by some place called "Magnetic Data Technologies"; I looked up their website and it was shocking to find out that they used REFURBISHED parts. Well, no wonder the drive didn't last as long as a hard drive should."

found this quote by a customer on Amazon.com May not be worth it after all. Thanks for all the comments.

A side: You guys have good luck with western digital's or not too much?
