Fantastic Four?

What about this one guys. Me being a comic geek I couldn't resist the midnight showing (which surprised me when it was packed considering how many people badmouth the trailers.)

Overall I thought the general plot sucked and it seemed like a sequence of fun events from the comics loosley tied together with no real cohesion. That and the dumbing down of doctor doom into a half assed threat was a real downer.

BUT...

I was really surprised how much I liked the character moments between ben and johnny and sue and reed. The whole thing had some cheesy dialog, but this made the movie bearable and almost worth the 9 bucks. I loved how they nailed human torch and the thing. Best translated characters in the movie. Reed didn't really become what I wanted until the end and sue.........wasn't sue, its was alba.

Even with all its faults I still enjoyed the movie, worth a rental, and only worth a dip in the theater if you're a fan.

Bob I wasn't planning on seeing this one (even though I am a huge fan of comic book/graphic novel movies myself but it just looks really bad in my opinion from all I have seen and read) but as fate would have it I just bought the new(er) "Man On Fire" DVD and it's supposed to come with one free ticket to see FF and they packaged 2 by accident. So there you go, now I have to see it! I'll post again once I see it, maybe even today.

it was fun...i think the seriousness of Sith, WOTW and even Batman left people a bit hungry for such entertainment. It is the summer.

If it was following say Spidey 3 it may not have done so well this weekend

I agree completely. I saw this last night, it was good because I used to be a comic geek, but it had it's flaws.

You said it right, the characters were great but the plot sucks.

SPOILERS

I thought it was interesting that it was only about Doom trying to kill the Fantastic Four...it's so basic, there was no "try to take over the world" or "this is what I'm planning, try and stop me" I mean I know those have been done to death...but I'd still take those over "Do you really think the bad guy is going to win and kill one of them??" going through my head the whole time...

I still liked it...Hey Toilet Bob, did you think it was Kevin Smith in the racing scene with Johnny Storm? It's not, but for half a second it looks like him. Stan Lee was the mail man.

Just got back from it. It was....eh.....OK.

Luckily i saw it for free. I wouldn't have wanted to spend money on it and hadn't planned on even seeing it. I would recommend it as a rental or wait for cable tv.

I didn't think Alba was bad at all, with the eception of Dr. Doom (who I agree was terrible and not frightening at all) and Mr. Fantastic (who I thought looked the part but was a terrible casting choice) the rest were good for me.

But the only really good parts were the scenes with actual emotion in them like The Thing trying to fit in. Some really touching small shots like him trying to pick up a ring, and eat with a fork and stuff. Those tiny glimpses blew away all the cheese on this one, if even for just a second.

Thank god for Batman Begins and Spider Man 2, I am so glad the comic adaptations have moved past this kiddie fluff with obvious product placements in every other scene.

Jessica is smokin hot.

Now that that is out of the way.

I'm not a Comic Junkie; I prefer a Graphic Novel over typical Comic Stories; I prefer things like Sin City and 30 Days of Night over Batman and Superman. Seem's everyone I know looovveess DC Comics and Marvel and Spiderman.

Anyway; I'll wait for DVD on this one no matter how good people say it is. I might consider seeing Superman Returns in the theatre purely for the GENESIS.

BUt Alba is hot.

NewYork Times.... " Fanstastic! "
Chicago Tribune....." Fun action pack comic! "
Vibe............" That was dope!"
SOURCE.........." hey pass that ****! Jessica Alba is smokin!"
BLUESPIDER.........." its awight."

I don't know, I expected alot out of this movie.. I don't even know why.. As cute as alba is I thought her acting was horrible! That suit did fit her just right!

Wussy Kids Movie! If you have any inclinations of checking it out, take your kids, that way it'll at least be somewhat worthwhile.

Saw the movie tonite.....it was O.K....wouldnt say best comic book movie ever..i think X-men 1 was better though.

The compositing between Johnny and the fire version of himself was cool.
I pretty much watched the movie for the cool special effects.

For the story...it sucked hairy anus....it was just like a revenge movie...simple story.." I WILL GET MY REVENGE ON THOSE FOUR FOR WHAT THEY DID TO ME AFTER THAT STUPID STORM!" BAAHHHHHH!!
I was like..."omg....this is gonna suck ass..i might jus pay attention to Alba and the effects."

Alba is hot..yes i agree with John on that...but i dont think she was the right person to play Sue's role.

And whats with that quick 5 min final battle between Doom and the 4? I was like...thats it??...i cryed after that part ended....i expected a longer more crazy battle.

And what the hell?? whats with all that science involved?? ..."you know..my calcuations say our relationship was bad"...for those of you who saw it...u know who said those stupid lines..."You know what happens to metal when it cools off too fast?"...soooo dumb....

I give this movie a 7 outta 10 Boz Stars....jsu becasue Alba was in the movie and the special effects were good.

the story.... 4 out of 10 Boz Stars.....pity....

I agree that Jessica Alba wasn't the best choice for the roll. (Awsome in Dark Angel and really good in Honey)

She's young and HOT but they kinda dulled this down, making her look older by giving her older-women hair styles and wardrobe to suit the roll of Sue (Mother figure of the group) so I didn't really buy her as the character

I think it was more about having a big name in the movie than finding the right actor.

Same for Dr Doom, Julian just wasn't beleivably bad or menacing at anypoint, and for a villain that's not a good thing.

However I felt that The Human torch kinda carried the movie he was exciting and brought some humour and enjoyment to the movie. He definitly has the coolest power of the group and combining this with a spontanious and reckless personality kept things interesting.

Good, fun movie but if you're looking for inspirational filmmaking and plot, look elsewhere!

I took my kid to see a special screening of this a few days ago at the WGA theatre in Beverly. Man, what piece of garbage. The only redeeming quality was watching my son's face light up when the Human Torch would flame on, that was cool. Whoever that Mr. Fantastic guy is was quite possibly the worste actor I've ever seen. Sorry to slam it, I was a big FF fan as a kid so I had high hopes.

To make it even worse, the writers of the film were there to do a q&a afterwards. The audience was full of writers who laughed at every bad line in the film, it was torturous to say the least. Screenwriters are the toughest critics and they let themselves be heard. I felt really bad for the writer who had to come up afterwards and answer questions. I left before the credits rolled so I didn't have to watch him cry.

To his credit, it is a comic book film, and there's something to be said for a fun popcorn cheasy film. But still, I thought it sucked ass. :)

PS Oh yeah, I really liked the torch guy, that actor has some great acting chops, I look forward to seeing him again.

One thing I just dont do is Superhero films. Weird.

Batman (Puke), FanFour, Hulk, Spiderman.... I can leave em.

I do ltend to like the more obscure ones; Hellboy, Blade, Sin City (graphic Novel style). I can appreciate you trippin on the boys face. I took my son (Jared) to the SITH and just hated the movie but was enjoying him enjoying it.

Right! It's so cool to watch them watch the film. I guess we're just reliving those Star Wars days through our little rascals. Kids rock, I think we tend to over analyse films and forget the purity of just having fun, squirming in our seat, laughing out loud, and just enjoying so called corny aspects of filmmaking.

Kerpow! Blam! KABOOM!

Just saw this last night -- what a stinker. I think it belongs in the bargain bin next to one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequels.

The Thing looked horrible -- on close-ups, you could see the costume pinching around his neck.

Alba was a bad choice for Sue Storm -- way hot, but not waspy enough. I think Naomi Watts would have been good.

Mr. Fantastic was okay. An older actor may have been better suited for the role.

The plot was pathetic.

Comic book guy wants to know why Sue Storm had to get naked on the bridge? She gets naked and turns invisible to slip by the cops, but how do Reed and Johnny end right behind her on the other side of the baricade? Talk about a lazy script. And how the hell did the Thing get from Baxter building to Doom's highrise in the span of two minutes?

The human torch effects were by far the highlight of the movie. I also noticed that they switched up the gamma ray effect from this trailer in the actual film:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/fox/fantastic_four/international/FF_large.html

The effect in that trailer I think is remniscent of Jack Kirby's original F4 art -- it's shame they went with a flashier effect.
