Fake $100's

Why did the government go through all the hassle and expense of developing all these counterfeit prevention measures when here in Iowa the second you whip out a $100 they mark it with the little counterfeit pen to see if it's real or not?
I've yet to see anyone examine a big bill to see the watermark, color changing ink, micro printing etc.
They just mark it with the pen and away they go.

Well, it could be because your average 16-year-old running the cash register at Hy-Vee or Casey's isn't going to be able to pick out a counterfeit bill of any denomination by sight... well, OK, except maybe those new Canadian $10's... ;)

There was some old show or movie in which the bad-guy counterfeiters get legit $1 bills, bleach away the ink, and re-print them as $20s, $50s, etc

Doesn't the counterfiet-catcher pen react with the paper, not the ink?

Someone's prolly doing that very thing, right now, for real.

I know it reacts to anywhere they mark on the bill. So, if it does react to the paper and not the ink then it's pretty pointless to be using the pen when there's all these other anti-counterfeit measures in place.
In the time it took this kid to find the pen and mark the bill, he could have examined it for every anti-counterfeit thing on the bill.
Course then he couldn't just mark the bill, he had to color in Benjamin's eyes with the pen.
