Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

NPR had an "independent" reviewer on who indicated that this film was not the typical "Moore" film i.e. he was not on camera very often but his voice was heard throughout the movie. Also, the reviewer indicated that he was surprised by it and that it was a stunning production with footage from Iraq regarding the abuse of prisoners before the "scandal" as well as a great deal more information on other issues. In any case, it will receive a great deal of press coverage when it comes out since it is "relevant" to today's issues. I am sure that it was "politically" motivated but if it is interesting/intriguing and sheds some light on issues then who cares. I'm certainly looking forward to it because of Moore's film concepts and it sounds like quite the film. I could care less about the political issues other than taking in some more "information" which will go with all the other available information. I do not see how this film could "defeat" Bush unless there is a smoking gun in it. It will be interesting to see how it plays out - maybe make things more interesting and fun..... dave

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

Hey barry I think your intention for this thread got lost. I will say I am a native texan and bush isn't liked very much here either (at least not in dallas, austin, houston, san antonio or any other major citiy). The small town and elderly love him though. I am a blue collar worker and trying to put myself through school on the nights and weekends (i'm only 21) and my tuition being raised 3 times in the last year and half hasn't helped. So (and i'm sorry barry) I'm glad someone has spoken out against bush who isn't a politician.

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

Hey, no problem. With other posters' help, I found the answer I was really looking for, which is that this film should be classified in the same category as a book -- i.e., it's a supposedly fact-based expose, it's decidedly one-sided, and you have to pay to experience it. In that classification, it should most definitely not be considered a campaign ad or subject to any type of censorship.

So, having that thought process completed, feel free to run with the thread wherever it goes! :)

this movie will make a lot of money, it is having the same word of mouth advertisment as the passion of the christ, just not the following ;D

Sorry bro, the president doesn't have anything to do with your tuition being raised.

Anyone else wonder how he got the "abuse footage" before anything broke about it? How very convenient I believe, in that it fits in with the political game right about now...

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

kai, the white house cut funding to public universities twice and the state government cut funding in the spring of 2003 so that they wouldn't have to raise taxes to insurance companies. Now the president didn't directly influence the latter, but the cutting of funds to the state of texes did indirectly do it. I can handle the tution being raised, I can even handle the extra hours I have to put in at work. I just can't handle every time he gets on that microphone how he says he is protecting for the children of tomorrow. That's the one pocket he is taking from

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

All film is propaganda, as well as books, tv, and every opinion you read here for that matter. Objective truth will always be beyond us my friends. That makes us all liars on some level. You could not reconstruct the truth with all of our opinions summed and squared. (and there is more than one genius in our midst)
That said, I find film makers like Michael Moore and Oliver Stone to be very amusing and informative, (in that order) not to mention invaluable to a jaded, media saturated society like ours. Their value is in the dialogue they inspire.
P.S. We should all be so lucky as to have their audience, and be worthy of the honour.

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

Moore did a great job just because all here are discussing about politics. A democratic country (or republic country) should do this more often.
In spain we had to wait for a tragic terrorist attack to people realize what government was doing.
I hope you can do the same but just with a movie.

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

Well said, Travis. We should always be discusing politics and keeping tabs on our own government. I was actually in Spain a few days after the Madrid bombing, and I really felt for the Spanish people. Seeing the demonstrations and the flags with black ribbons everywhere brought back 9/11 for me. And I felt horrible that it was a result of the Spanish government aligning itself with my government in a war that the majority of Spanish people disagreed with. To blindly follow any politician is a mistake. Whether you agree with Moore or not, at least his film is bringing dialogue and scrutiny to the war.

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

I wouldnt call it a "documentary" made by someone supporting the democratic party.

Lets face it, a democrate cant do a good "documentary" about a republican and vice versa. Its just gonna be propaganda.

One of the big problem in this world is that too many people swallow propaganda without a doubt. We have seen this too much in Europe...

It's like coming to a DVX board and asking if the XL1 is any good. :D

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

Well, propaganda is in news, ads, schools, religion, music, books, all art, etc.

The Oxford definition is:
information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote a political cause or point of view.

  — ORIGIN originally denoting a committee of Roman Catholic cardinals responsible for foreign missions: from Latin congregatio de propaganda fide ‘congregation for propagation of the faith’.

And by political, what isn't these days? Every inch of the mainstream media is slanted one way or another, and only when it's blatently obvious, Moore or FOX News, does it lead to a discussion. Certainly the nature of this Iraq war is infused with propaganda from every nook and cranny and by every human being, including the military, government, Democracy Now!, FOX, CNN, the Bush Administration, Moore, etc.

Re: Fahrenheit 9/11 premieres at Cannes

Yes there is actually very few things thats is objective, but there is a whole lot of people out there who can be more objective than Moore.

If the Bush-adm sends a commercial everybody knows that (well almost everybody) this is propaganda. But thats not the case with Moores movie. To many people thinks its a documentary.

And I dont think a Bush commercial will get any awards at Cannes.  ;)

To get a more objective view between XL1s and DVX100a i would ask a PD170 owner.   8)
