How do you guys all fade to black or white? I've been inserting a white .jpg file and crossfading to it. I'm still pretty new at all this. How do you guys do it?
Good Morning Matthew- If you are using Premiere there are a number of ways... If you want a simple fade in, place your clip on the timeline and highlight it, and advance to the point you want your fade-in to complete (say, maybe a second?). Then, in the effect controls portion of the monitor window, find where it says "opacity" and click the little "add/remove keyframe" (its the little diamond between the two arrows). Then, go to the beginning of the clip, then type "0" (zero) up in the opacity setting where it says 100, and press enter. You should be good to go with that . . . reverse the process at the other end of your clip to fade to black. I usually add a couple of frames (or cheat in from the end) to set my zero point...this keeps you from having a ghosted image at the end (where you can almost still make out the image you faded out from. Don't fall in love with fades except perhaps for the beginning or end of your film -- good cuts are a lot more professional looking than a lot of cross disolves, fades, or transitions (just my two cents).
or use a dissolve ( I have dissolve as default Ctrl-D) . Slide the dissolve to the end of the clip in the Efects Control Window. ie. it does not have to overlap into the next clip
Fade to White is a different issue than fade to black : Create a White Color Matte instead of a jpeg. Simpler & quicker should you choose to do it this way. Color Mattes are created from the menu for new items - icon under the project window.
