You not only have to consider the price of the lens, but also the expense of building an addition to your house so that you can store the damn thing.

That was announced yesterday on DPReview and it has all sorts of nicknames...

Sigma's 50-500 is known as the Bigma...

This is being called the godzigma right now with ball park guesses coming in at around $5-7K for it.

The crazy thing is if you use it on a 1.5x crop d-slr like a Nikon you are effectively getting 750mm@ 2.8 and they are introducing a 2x teleconverter for it.

My 70-200 f/2.8 wears the camera, but this brings a whole new definition to that phrase.

5-7K is dirt cheap.

Dont be surprised, to see it used on the next Michael Bay movie...... Scarlett johanses, 3rd eyelash will be in focus.

You want a big lens?
You may well have seen it before, but this one has to take the biscuit:
http://www.dvinfo.net/canon/images/images17.php

Canon XL1 with a Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6 and a 2x teleconverter.
An effective focal length of some 17000mm, when you take into account the crop factor.
The mind boggles....:shocked::shocked::shocked:

I'd like to see some papparazis trying to shoot from a car with that thing. I would imagine it would be a little difficult trying to be discreet when you have four people holding it up and focusing it for you. Or imagine trying to photograph combat. The enemies would probably **** themselves, thinking it's a rocket launcher. Imagine trying to fly somewhere with that thing in a bag going through the x-ray scanner. I think the best way to get a shot with that would be the slim pickins method: dropping out of a plane while riding it.

but that's just the thing, who says you even need to be in the same town when you shoot with that thing. I could become a Papparazi from my hometown of Seattle and still get great shots of Paris Hilton. Ok . . my joke for the month. :)

sorry for the noob question, but I am still learning & trying to understand lenses and focal lengths. What is so great about a 500mm range at f2.8?

Doesn't the hvx200 do 423mm as a 35mm equivalent at f2.8? What's the difference?

The difference is "equivalent". The HVX's lens length is 55mm. If you want to compare "equivalent", that 500mm lens would be delivering about 3500mm.

I've got an old Zeiss Fernobjektiv 500mm lens, but it's an f/8 and it's a prime. A zoom at 500mm with apochromatic elements and a fixed f/2.8 just sounds really pretty good.

Wow. How much did that thing cost??

Oh... I see. Then that's amazing! I didn't realize the lens wasn't rated as a 35mm lens... so this is for video cameras w/interchangeable lens system? So would a Canon XL2 be able to use it?
