Eyeglass wearers: An Rx especially for shooting?

This post is probably more for the over-40 crowd (of which I am a member)... I have to wear glasses when I shoot and my no-line bifocals are a real pain to use for the task.

Has anyone gone to the trouble of having some glasses made specifically for shooting? I would like to know what your requirements were and how you communicated them to the optometrist.

I wear glasses that have an astigmatism(sp) prescription. I had my optomitrist make a round lens with my prescription and then velcro it into what ever camera I happen to be using. With a mark for correct postioning of which way is up, shown to me by the doctor, this works great! I only use it with film cameras. After taking a quick survey of eyecup sizes, I determined a lens size that would be one size fits all. My guess is, sorry don't remember, that size was approximately 40mm. The cost was only about $20 so give it a try with bifocals. You'll find that optomists are very adept at understanding optics. One cameraman I work with has astigmatism and bifocals. He puts the astigmatism lens in the eyecup and a pair of bifocals around his neck. Good luck! Hope this helps.

Thanks for the input. My problem has more to do with close focus (my eyes) when using the LCD screen or reading labels on the camera, especially at concerts/dark environments. I can correct the EVF using the dioptric correction. It's when my eyes are away from the EVF that I have problems...
