Hello everyone. Does anyone know where I can get the cstand Matt was using to mount his joker 400 near the floor? I know the same could be done by using apple crates + babypin plates but im just curious. I tried googling around and the lowest cstand i can find is the matthews one which i dont think is the same thing he used. See below for the link.

It's probably a mini base - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/620882-REG/Avenger_A2007_A2007_Mini_Turtle_Base.html with adapter (jr to baby) - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3601-REG/Avenger_E200_E200_Stand_Adapter.html. Matthews make their own versions too.

FYI there are also these for even lower than the combo above and easier than bolting pins to plates etc. - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/215853-REG/Manfrotto_003M_3095M_Mini_Backlight_Light.html

Man i swear you guys rock. Thank you very much. I will be mounting tungsten lights on it so i want to make sure its sturdy. Thanks again. I will look into these.

I have one of these:
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/139978-REG/Matthews_756120_Century_C_Turtle_Base.html

But I've used just the turtle base from any of my C-Stands before, which is a Jr receiver, to mount one of my 800 HMI's, which are dual mounts(Jr pin if you remove the retaining knob/baby pin receiver). But you could use a Baby to Jr adapter, if your light is only a baby receiver(5/8").

This would be my solution as well. Do it all the time with the added advantage of using it as a standard C-stand when you want. Also, a C-stand with detachable base like this can be far easier to pack in a case should you need to fly with it.

I have a Matthews Mini Preemie Baby stand that I got years ago. Pretty handy. 20-inch minimum height.

Alas, mine doesn't have the stylish red bits. But build like a tank.

Don't know if it was just an East Coast thing but we used to call these Lawn Darts. Do kids today even know what an actual lawn dart is anymore? They've been outlawed for decades. Not to be confused with a Gary Coleman or a (shudder) Mickey Rooney.

We never owned any, but my best friend's family had a set.

Lawn Darts: We played with those. But even as dumb kids, we realized that those things were dangerous, and not dangerous in a fun way. And...

That Matthews Lawn Dart costs $175 new. That's a lot. I got mine along with a bunch of other grip stuff at an auction 20+ years ago for next to nothing. As useful as it is (and I last used it a week before the COVID-19 shutdown), I too think I'd go with the R&G's turtle base idea.

Avenger has two types of turtle bases, the mini I linked to, as well as a normal turtle base - https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/3543-REG/Avenger_A2009_A2009_Turtle_Base_for.html.

The difference being the mini has a smaller footprint of "29.53" (75 cm)" vs. "37.4" (94 cm)". The smaller version saves space but wouldn't be as stable when assembled as a full c-stand.

Re turtle bases used in complete stands, you need to be careful when working with people who are used to regular c-stands because they may go to pack it down and the base falls onto the hardwood floor of the nice house you're shooting in.

Since several people sent me PMs, I might as well define terms publically.

Lawn Dart: A miniature but heavy-duty light stand, such as the Matthews model shown earlier in this thread.

Gary Coleman: A half-sized C-stand, meaning one with a 30" tall main shaft and 20" arm instead of a 60" shaft & 40" arm. Clearly an 80s/90s reference.

Mickey Rooney: A short and very slow dolly move. I.E. a "little creep".

The More You Know...

Lawn darts were before my time and I always felt like I was missing a reference when I saw them in movies. They feature throughout Me, Myself & Irene and even save the day thanks to Whitey.

I looked up the history and how they were banned, it's a pretty sad story. So I'm sure when using them in movies there's an element of dark comedy but probably used purely as props too, as well as other references I'm missing.

I settled with this for now. Looking at the specs, it should be able to handle my Arri 1k with barndoor.

I have a bunch of those(or at least similar) and I don't think I've had anything larger than an Arri 650 on mine. Are you talking about a 1K open face or fresnel? The old open face units weren't bad, weight and size wise. The fresnels are a lot bigger and heavier, though.

Mine arrived yesterday and it worked perfectly. I will have to sand bag it when tilting the 1k. Thanks again guys!
