extreme lens flares

How do they get those extreme lens flares in a lot of videos where the practical light source would create usually a blue streak that goes from one edge of the frame to another. Is this a filter that assists this? I would assume so, if so what filter would this be, i'm guessing something similar to a star filter?

It depends, sometimes you can get good results if you position it correctly and don't use a preset but rather create your own... it all depends on what you are willing to do with it.

I am trying to create some cool flares too, and I am having a very hard time making them look good. It's just a trend, but I want to use it, sometimes. It is VERY hip theese days... But this is what I got so far:

It basically depends on the lens you use, and the type and power of the light. Good modern lenses flare much less than old lenses, and telephotos flare more than wide angles, but if you don't have a lot of DOF, your flares would be out of focus. Since the DVX only has one lens, I'm waiting for the 35mm adapters so I can experiment some more. I have also tried the Zoom of the 16mm camera I use in school, much better results (sometimes, when I'm lucky...).
