Extreme DIY

I had my parents send me a roll of aluminum roof flashing, a cloth measuring tape, and my new Century .6 WA, but that's not the point.

My Mother also sent me a book she had from our days in the theater:

Here's How! A Guide To Economy In Stagecraft published in 1942.

Included in the book are plans for a home-made light dimmer. Here are the plans:

OMG! And I thought messing with diacs and triacs was a pain in the butt.

Here's the last paragraph of the accompanying text:

"Overloading of a salt-water dimmer is indicated by the boiling of the water. When this is observed, the upper plate should be quickly raised, and a larger container for the salt water should be obtained."

Just so you know. ;)

Re: Extreme DIY

That seems EXTREMELY dangerous... although in a controlled university environment, sounds like a fun experiment...

Re: Extreme DIY

But can you picture the lighting techs backstage control 10 lekos, 4 scoops, and a row or two of pars? Going full up wouldn't be so bad -- everyone just let go of the ropes.

But going down for a nice fadeout? Smoothly?

:D

IAL, if you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything. :)

"Wow that was some gig--I almost got electrocuted!  What was with those death-row dimmers? Last time I ever work for that cheap @ss company.  Time to drive home now.  Hum de dum, driving along.  HEY, no brakes--it feels like my brake drums have been removed.....ahhhhhhhhh! $^%$$#%^$#."
