extra chroma sampling when downconverting hd to sd

If i have HDV footage and convert it to an uncompressed sd file will premiere take advantage of teh extra resolution and give me better color space or will it simply lower the rez and thats it.

depends on what you convert it to - pulling 1080i down to 480i should get you to 4:2:2 I would think, without chugging the math. Or will it be odd and PAL like, since coming from 4:2:0? Anybody spent more than 9 seconds thinking about this? Shrinking it down definitely improves the color SAMPLING, but that inherently doesn't change the color SPACE.

I am interested in your conclussion - How will you test it?

ie how do you measure or determine what the color sampling / space is on a clip?

I don't know exactly. I exported the hdv footage to uncompressed to dvcpo50 and to dv and the results were minimally diffrent. I guess it would be better to test on a gradient or something no regular footage. the uncompressed 4:4:4 did seem like it held more information however. But i still found that mpegstream downrezed my footage better than within premiere (it even has a better downrez option) the result was sharper. I would say if you need to downrez try not to do it within premiere if you want the extra quality in the end. I know that hd and widescreen dv are both 16:9 but if you do the math there aspect ratios are slightly different. So when you convert hd to sd you either have to crop a little from the top or leave black on the sides. what is the precedure for this normally?
