External thunderbolt hard drive solution, 8-12TB needed

Hi,

I'm using an iMac so I can't put any more HD's inside of it. I need about 8-12TB of space for an indie feature we're shooting. I'm shooting on a Sony FS700+Odyssey 7Q that produces Prores 422HQ HD and 2K raw files.

I've been looking at LaCie 5big as one solution. I have one G-Tech 8TB thunderbolt drive that I like except it's quite noisy. I don't have an option to put the drives in another room or closet and thunderbolt cables exceeding 2 meters are very expensive as for as I know.

Is anyone with a similar situation come up with a good solution. I'm happy to do backup's to cheap USB drives. Just need a fast, quite external system to edit from.

Thanks,

s

The 5Big only uses RAID 0, 1, and JBOD. No RAID 5 on that model if it matters to you.

I have one of the first generation Pegasus R4 enclosures with 16TB, and it's really nice. About 500mb/s read & write with Toshiba drives. You can buy the enclosure sans drives and then full it up yourself to save some money.

Another option I saw recently were the Thunderbolt RAIDs from Other World Computing. I've had their eSATA RAID5 enclosures in the past and have been impressed.
